A corrupt Hong Kong police officer flees to Japan with diamonds worth millions, where a Ninja group is protecting him. Two undercover cops from Hong Kong, Muscles and Ricky, travel to Japan to apprehend the renegade cop. When the two cops encounter the ninjas, Ricky is kidnapped during the fight. Muscles then calls his supervisor for assistance. Since the mobsters in Japan already have information on the officers of the Hong Kong Royal Police Force, Muscle asks instead for his orphanage friends, nicknamed the “Five Lucky Stars”, to be sent over to assist him. The supervisor agrees and collects the five friends, who are all either petty criminals or low-wage workers. They refuse to aid the police at first, but the supervisor cunningly sets up a trap for them and blackmails them into helping. After being threatened with incarceration, the five ultimately agree when a pretty HKRPF detective is chosen to lead them on their mission. This film includes one of the best female fighting scenes in the Hong Kong film industry and one of Jackie Chan’s famed action sequences, when he and Yuen Bao climb a Ferris wheel in the Fuji-Q Highland Amusement Park. Reviews
PROS:
+ Pretty much everything that made Winners & Sinners good is present here, just in MUCH smaller amounts
+ There is actually more action present [if you can make it past the first half]
+ A couple of the comedic elements are actually quite funny
CONS:
- The overall pacing is EXTREMELY slow for this kind of movie
- There are also many issues with the plot as it is boring and confusing a lot of the time
- At least one of the jokes is uncomfortable to be seen around family members [dealing with r***]
- Ironically, even though most of the cast is the same, the new characters are less likeable (even Jackie)
I actually wanted to fast forward through most of this movie... I enjoyed parts of it, but I can't wholly recommend this.
The payoff for all of the boredom was mediocre at best.
