As a movie you would watch again and again it has very little value. However the classic story combined with cheesy sets, cast and scenes make it a good film to add to your watch list when you are feeling depressed, simply because you will either giggle either at the outrageousness of the characters or laugh out loud at the strangeness of the film as a whole.

This movies.... I'm not usually a fan of asian movies because most of them are short and don't develop the story. That's why I prefer a good drama instead.

But even if I didn't like it... I had to watch this. I have to confess that what made me watch it was Mizobata Junpei. Yeah, that hot piece of an actor that I always admired on all his works.

But soon I fell in love with the movie itself. I wish they could have developed more their relationship after or other characters as well but it didn't disappoint me. I wish i could watch and see more of Junpei!

Usually I don't watch japanese dramas/movies because its humour is too exaggerated. But this has the right charge of humour even though some stuff I'd take out.

For me this movie is really perfect!!! Watch it, you won't regret it!

Where to begin, where to begin, now I am going to start off and say, if you are new to drama, and you came from anime or manga, watch this, from the cheesy jokes to the stupid yet awesome effect everything in it resembles a manga, and seeing as it is based off a manga, rightfully so.

The story is very simple, the main character Nagashima Haruna was a very large fan of sports in middle school, and decided in high school she would give it up and become popular, so she can find a boyfriend, problem is Haruna knows nothing about what's popular with guys, till she meets Komiyama Yoh, a handsome and popular boy, and she decides to ask him to become her coach in love, and hesitantly, he agrees to help her out, and thus havoc ensues.

Now I am going to start off and say, if you are looking for deep and heart felt love all the way through, you aren't going to find it here, but if you are looking to literally Roll On the Floor Laughing, you will love this movie, with a decent story, if kind of generic, outstanding acting, constant good music, and a movie you will be able to re watch multiple times (A friend of mine has already re watched it around 7 times) and some truly memorable romantic moments, I couldn't suggest a better movie to fit the category.

As an overall I give it a 9, a pretty generic storyline, but pulled off in such a way you can't help but loving the movie.

Super Fluffy and funny very nostalgic

A literal live-action anime film. I felt like I was watching an anime with how the scenes were filmed and acted out. I did enjoy myself and it was straight-up fluff. I does feel strange watching this 10+ yrs later I feel like I'd probably like most of those clothes most of the actors wore in the 2010s but with how my taste in fashion has changed I kept feeling myself cringe but that's how it goes when your preferences change over the yrs. The male lead is still super hot I still find his aesthetic hot. It was so nostalgic feeling even tho I've never seen this film before, but I still recommend this film. It was super cute and it did get a happy ending. Crazy to see how much has changed in 10 yrs.

It's important to mention I haven't the read the manga, so I don't have anything to compare this to. As purely a light and fluffy high school rom com, it's good. It's under two hours as well, so it has a decent flow and doesn't really have any boring dips. There's a lot of really great randomness in it as well, which are probably taken from the manga, but I can't confirm that. The level of quirkiness is awesome, such as a class room with a hare statue… long dividing curtains in the school and a main character which doesn't hesitate to plow through people and knock them over.

The movie isn't genius, but it's a great weekend movie to lift your mood and give you a dose of innocent young love.

The FL is a softball sports star. Upon entering high school, she decides to give up softball and focus on obtaining a love life. Since she’s been a tomboy most of her life, she’s unable to attract anyone. By chance, she meets the ML who’s an upperclassman, handsome, and popular. He agrees to coach her with the goal of getting a boyfriend. However, the agreement is canceled should she fall in love with him. The movie is light-hearted and funny. The FL plays her character well as the awkward tomboy. She stays in her character and consistent throughout the movie; I appreciate that she didn’t really change the way she dressed or do her hair. I also appreciate that the FL doesn’t go through this transformational phase from ugly duckling to swan like we’ve seen in many similar dramas/movies just so that the ML could fall in love with her. The ML instead slowly falls in love after spending time with her and seeing all her good qualities. He doesn’t need to see her with a make-over because he just loves her for her.

So Cute!

This story is so freaking cute and adorable. As soon as I finished watching the movie I wanted more and made sure to search more about it online.
If you want a fun time then this movie is highly recommended.
The Fl is the best part. The Actress played her to be so adorable and cute. I just wanna hug her in every scene she is in giving her all.
The Ml's good and though the story is predictable it has charm and that's what counts.
We really root for them to end up together and they leave us wanting more of their adorable relationship.

I absolutely adore concepts like this one, with the guy-who-helps-the-girl-become-popular trope. Unfortunately, High School Debut didn't bring anything new or exciting to the trope. It was incredibly typical, and it was so hard to get attached to the characters. The actors were great, but it was so hard for me to connect to any of them.

The humor factor was definitely overdone as well. I found myself cringing at all the crazy costumes and weird antics. I know this is normal with Japanese shows, and I've enjoyed similar bits in Lovely Complex, but there was just something about High School Debut that lacked any real impact.

Watching this movie was painful. It supposed to be funny, but it felt more like it was forced to. The whole thing seemed fake, not to mention the cinematography that was poor. Probably they tried to make this one look like a real manga, with all the overreaction and the seriously loud and idiotic music used in many scenes. Plus the story had no originality, as all the clichés that could have happened, happened. Now, for the performances, they weren't good. Some of the actors were like performing for a school play rather than a film. Finally, the chemistry between the two actors was, well, nonexistent (you can figure that out easily from the kissing scene). So, because it felt more like a badly made TV movie, 2 out of 10.

Sweet and Silly

It's funny thinking that it's been at least eight years since I first read the manga. It was actually the first shoujo manga I tried, and I loved it. So cute!

The movie captures quite a bit of the magic and silliness of the story, maybe a bit over the top at times, but I think that's okay.

Story: Somehow they managed to condense the story into 90 minutes convincingly. It's actually a fairly decent adaptation and that surprised me. Just enough was left in to keep the feel of the manga, but cut out the unimportant stuff, like Asami's crush on her brother and her manipulating Fumi, two things I never liked in the manga. Plus we didn't have to sit through a sports festival, so YAY!

Acting/Cast: Here's where the movie shines. Eight years ago I had no idea who Yuuki Furukawa or Suda Masaki were. Now I do, so I'm glad I didn't watch "High School Debut" in 2012, but only found it now. Because now I can fully appreciate how fun it is having these two amazing actors in this movie. Suda stole my heart as Fumi, a character I've always loved. He was absolutely darling, in so many ways, and only 18, so the enthusiasm he displayed is adorable. And Yuuki, despite the CRAZY hair, was great as Asaoka. They were both so lively here! Mizobata Junpei worked as Yoh, although it took a little while for me to settle into him playing the ML. He's a silly secondary character in "Buzzer Beat" with Yamapi so that took a bit of convincing for me to buy him as Yoh, but I really liked him in the end. And of course, Ono Ito as Haruna. She would have been 16 at the time and she worked really great in such an energetic and honest role.

Music: About average, honestly. Nothing really memorable, but not bad.

Rewatch Value: Since I'm a Suda Masaki fan to the core at this point, yes, I'll watch it again. And Yoh and Haruna are very cute together, once I overcame some of the absurd filming elements. I think it's probably a rewatch only for Sudacchi fans or folks who really loved the original manga, like me.

Overall: It's a fun film. Silly, very silly, but the manga is silly too, so it works. I was surprised to find an almost actual kiss at the end between Yoh and Haruna. I was expecting another flat board kiss as I call them, so this one was a pleasant surprise. If you like silly high school dramas, emphasis on silly, and are a fan of any of the actors, then this one is well worth the watch. Like I said, Suda was adorable. The hair, the smile, the clothes, all the feels. He's reason enough to watch "High School Debut."

You wanna know what it would be if Lovely Complex live action compiled with Switch Girl!! live action? This movie is the answer! LOL
The comical effect isn't as incredible as Switch Girl!!, but that's enough to make you laugh from the first to the very last minute. And remember the bald teacher who always wear a wig - and always said to his students that that's not a wig - on Lovely Complex? He also appear in this movie...with the same appearance and personality! LOL
So far this movie is very entertain. Worth to be watched. Well, basically I love teen romance or school life theme (^_^)
The manga have a longer story and conflict. A lot of scene missing or being modificated (of course), but I can't choose which is better, because they both interesting and entertaining in their own way (^_^)

I've read the manga a long time ago, and I gotta admit I kind of liked it. So it's pretty obvious that I just had to watch the movie.

5 minutes passed and I already was slightly pissed off because of You and his stupid thinking that all girls are the same (they don't know what they want therefore they always end up hurting the guy's feelings). Dude, seriously? Just because of one bad experience with girls you tar them all with the same brush? Not cool if you ask me.

Haruna is your typical dumb, childish and naive protagonist who always does her best because hello it's Japan. What pissed me off is that she looks for a boyfriend forcibly. She thinks that just because Christmas is coming, she has to find a boyfriend. Yeah, good luck with that. Haruna tries to change herself so guys will like her. What a great message, isn't it?

Also Jesus freaking Christ, she develops crushes on guys so easily. And the reason why this keeps happening is so stupid. I swear she would have a crush on any guy who shows the slightest interest in her, for example talks to her or compliments her out of politeness.

Now the best part. Even though Haruna is dumb and childish, I didn't dislike her. She wasn't as annoying as most female protagonists in dramas. Oh, by the way, Ono Ito's acting is pretty bad. Seriously, why is Japanese acting so eccentric.

Anyway, you can watch this movie when you're really bored and looking for some romcom cliche. But you won't miss much if you don't watch it.
