Moo Hee is the youngest daughter of Lee Geum Hwa, one of the most proficient gayageum players in Korea. Having mastered the instrument under the guidance of her demanding, hot-tempered and perfectionist mother, she studies Gugak at Seoul University but wants to study music in the U.S. to free herself from the troubled and poverty-stricken life of her mother. Geum Hwa, despite being known for being one of the last students of the famous sorikkun Seo Gwi Bong, is shunned from the community due to her traditionalist views and her unwillingness to perform. Even Moo Hee's professor, Han Seol Bin, once studied gayageum under Geum Hwa, but due to their conflicting views, Geum Hwa grew a deep hatred for her former student and refused to forgive her repeatedly. In the midst of all this, as Geum Hwa's skills on the gayageum start to fail her due to her mental turmoil, she seeks Yoo Dang, her former lover and gosu drum player who used to accompany her. Yoo Dang had given up traditional music due to the dwindling audience and changed generations, as well as a changing gugak landscape. This drama paints a realistic picture of the status and future of traditional music in Korea, as well as the struggles of a person rooted in traditions in the modern world.
