This show basically follows typical Western episodic standards, rather than having an overarching plot. Thus it differs quite a bit from the normal Asian drama. In a crime show I enjoy this since each murder investigation has it's own story. I found the investigative part of this drama among the most realistic of the Asian forensic/police dramas that I've seen, as well. Not surprising since the story comes from the memoirs of an actual Chinese forensic investigator. The main actor does a fine job portraying Dr. Qin. The other two main characters do an adequate job, nothing spectacular but not annoying either.
All in all, if you are a fan of CSI type crime shows, this one is likely to engage your interest. The various crimes solved actually occurred, which makes them more interesting than so many of the fictional, contrived murders littering the drama landscape.

Story: 7.5/10
I'm like a little obsessed with crime shows and stuff so I'm being a little harsh. Overall, if this was the first time I saw a crime show, this would blow my mind. But alas, I've seen a few good ones so this doesn't really compare that well.
The story was good in the sense that most questions got answered. You find out who almost everyone is at the end. But what bothered me was that the story wasn't really tightly connected. The overarching theme was really loose and it felt a little bit forced, like parts of it was inserted just because it'll add suspense but it didn't really relate to anything too significant.
The overarching plot was predictable and too typical. I mean it's still a decent drama, I would definitely recommend, but it was a *little* disappointing.
But the individual crimes and stuff, that was kinda neat. Props.
What I appreciated was the comedic relief, they were inserted a really good times so you're not psychologically stressed the entire show. And it really builds on character development.

Acting: 8/10
The main characters really worked well together, not to mention the male leads were definitely eye candy ^^ Character development only really happened for Dr. Qin, the rest kinda helped him a long with it. Which was cute. But development was pretty typical and expected. At least the acting was professional.

Music: 6.5/10
There were not really a lot of memorable OST parts that I could remember. I'm pretty good aurally so I would remember a song that relates a certain scene or whatever. The only vaguely good parts I remember is the quirky tune during comedic relief parts. When ever that music came on, I just felp more relaxed because nothing bad is happening.

Rewatch: 5/10
I don't typically rewatch dramas, but this was short and sweet enough to maybe go and pick out my favorite episodes. What I love about these dramas are that the beginnings are individual crimes and stories so you can watch it separately.

Overall: 7/10
It was a little disappointing that the overarching theme was too loose and typical. It was too predictable and thus a little anti-climatic. But the individual crimes were pretty decent and enjoyable.
If anyone is looking for a good crime show starter or just a laid back drama, this is definitely a good one.

I thought this show was going to be something like Sherlock or Love Me If You Dare because the summary from MDL kinda gives similar suggestions. But alas...it is completely different.

This is basically a case by case show.  The focus on the cases is really the entire show.  It doesn't really showcase any background information of the characters. There is a bit of humor  like small jokes, jabs and sarcastic scenes between the characters, but like I said, it revolves solely around the different cases.  I thought the main mc, Qin, would be like those genius characters I mentioned before but he really is just displays his socially awkwardness and that's it. You don't really get the full extent and knowledge of the personalities of any one of the characters.  It really is based on your own interpretation of what the characters are like.  There is no romance, no background struggles besides from solving the cases.  Episodic.  Like I mentioned, besides from a little humor here and there, nothing else. Acting wise, I have no compliments or complaints.  I don't think I'm going to rewatch this show.  It really is kinda dull and one sided when telling the story of the cases.  The cases though, are somewhat interesting.  The gruesomeness of the forensic investigations aren't especially high but to people that are weak to even just seeing somebody cut open a cadaver or seeing large amounts of blood, then it is on the slightly grisly side.

If you are solely interested in a mystery and like watching how cases are being solved, then this show is for you.  It cuts out all the fluff of the character relationships, backgrounds, etc and focuses on the process of how the police force and forensics professionals solve the cases.

Great cast. The men are both eye-candies. Amazing chemistry between actors/actresses, and I especially like that they did not really focus on the romance angle. It's also the first time I've seen a Chinese female actress successfully pull off a very "bro" relationship with her coworkers (they literally call her "Brother Bao" or "Mister Bao") instead of getting written into a romantic spin-off, so I have to give a lot of kudos to that actress. Tons of humorous moments between the three leads, so that was icing on the cake.

The plots are pretty interesting (not mind-blowing, but interesting enough that you'll want to continue watching). There isn't anything I haven't seen before on any other show, but the show was medically educational. I actually learned a few very interesting facts about the human body and general function of things. The scenes were also pretty streamlined and played with your emotions pretty well. There wasn't a single boring moment.

My only nitpick is that the actors/actresses have a habit of touching their face all the time... including during an autopsy or while examining a corpse. So they'll be prodding a bloated and rotten corpse with their gloved hands, and then wipe sweat from their face in the next second. Okaaay.

I watch this because of Li Xian, but then I really love the story and all the casts. This drama is just like TV Series CSI, and since I love that series, I also love this. But I think I must warn you because the first 2 episodes really shake my stomach in the level I want to throw up. They really explicit about the corpse (or the remaining of it), that’s why I put ‘18+’ sign here. What relieved me was that in the following episodes, they censored the corpse with whatever their conditions.

The story was great. It seems that the cases are stands alone, but then they’re related to the one Qin Ming’s old case. Those case also reveal Qin Ming’s past and his father’s case. Too bad they didn’t show or explain the detail of Qin Ming’s old case which became the background of some case.

As for the casts, they’re really did a great job.
Zhan Ruo Yun did a great job of portray Qin Ming’s stoic and systematic personality.
Jiao Jun Yan also great at portray Li Da Bao’s character. It’s so funny to watch how brave she is when facing Qin Ming at his territory, a morgue (o^▽^o)
Li Xian as Lin Tao is also great. He can be serious at some time and be silly in the very next second. But I think he still a bit clumsy when he hold a weapon (^_^;)

Great Show!...... You can take breaks between cases..... there is any overall arch story (which is considering this is asian drama it is okay) as well multiple short stories (cases) in this series. Acting is great! There is perfect amount of light comedy (the best part of the series imo) mixed into this wonderful CSI kind of series. The cases are pretty cool and quite realistic making it better than CSI (which has sometimes quite whacky science and cases). For those who are wondering if there is any romantic element (like snail falls in love), there is none but that actually this show is actually much better.

I came here because Zhang Ruo Yun (def eye candy) was in it! He was quite good in this drama... all though I am very biased in that manner :P

I wish things were done a little differently in the beginning but I still enjoyed the show and it had a cute ending.
Overall the story was well done. They did a great job explaining everything and introducing you to all the right characters. My only issue is that the beginning felt really loose. It didn't tie into the rest of the story as tightly as I would have liked. The later half of Medical Examiner Dr. Qin was the better half in my opinion. Each episode furthered the plot along and answered more questions.
The ending was great! The dynamics among the three main characters was great throughout the show so it was so nice to see a happy ending for them.
I'm not sure I would watch this again but I definitely wouldn't mind a second season.

Mystery Theatre at its best

Qin, Medical Examiner is a very tense drama, with suspense and sporadic comedic dialog to alleviate the tension. The autopsy scenes are very graphic.

Zhang Ruo Yun, Jiao Jun Yan and Li Xian created the best forensic TV drama team. Every case was tense, as the subplot unfolded. The supporting actors also did a very good job.

Directing and editing were done well, except for the constant shaky camera that caused motion sickness. The director could have invested a few budget dollars in a tripod for the cameraman. Music was very good, and fit the mood of the scenes. Overall, a well done drama, similar in style to the British detective dramas!

I was watching this purely because of Zhang Ruo Yun and thinking that this is gonna be one of those dramas with unclear plots and bad actings (you know the usual low budget Cdrama) but I actually really surprised when I watched the first episode!! This drama is actually pretty legit!! Okay, it's not as good as Sherlock, but it's actually really fun and interesting to watch, there are new crimes to solve in every episode and I actually really like the fact that there was no romance here.

You guys should give this a try!! I swear you won't regret it.

PS: I don't usually re-watch a drama (except Ten Miles of Peach Blossom LOL , so I rated it pretty low.

I decided to watch this drama because I love crime dramas. They are one of my favorite genres. This series is not your average crime drama though. There is a lot less interviewing suspects and a whole lot more forensic work so if you are squeamish don't watch this or skip over certain parts. The characters themselves are funny and unique, with Dr. Qin being at the helm. He is your average no nonsense professional, whereas his assistant and the detective are more loose I wanna say. I found this trio's interactions fun and their chemistry is spectacular. The acting was great and you do get a reprieve from the crime drama part briefly when you get to see them going out to have a team meal or just what they do in their personal lives. So it's not all about the murders. I would recommend this drama to anyone who is a crime drama enthusiast that doesn't mind gruesome crime scenes and autopsy scenes. This show gets 10/10.

Great Show Except....

Here's another completely biased review from me to you.

I absolutely loved the first 15 episodes of this series. This is a typical murder of the week show. What makes it so special is the cast. This is how you do bromance! Including the FL! She was there as one of the guys only, not as a romantic interest or damsel in distress. Well, except for the last episode but we'll get to that later.

When cdramas need to add a female to the mix to make a series not so gay?, this is the way to do it. The character is all those cliches that are used to describe female leads in these types of shows: spunky, fiesty, smart, cute, whatever. She is adorable. Plus, she was awesome. One of the team, pulling her own weight and then some. I really wish this type of character was used more often in cdramas instead of the toddler breathy baby-talking helpless females who need to be rescued all the time. And damn, this was a 2016 series so ahead of it's time.

So like I said, the first 15 episodes were great fun. The chemistry between all 3 characters was just perfect with their bantering. Loved it! And then did they get another writer or something? Cause all of a sudden it went from the fun murder of the week trope to the typical 'ML has a dark past with his father being unjustly murdered and him trying to find out what happened with a psycho stalker who is killing people to f*ck around with the ML and all of a sudden the ML is framed for murder and everyone thinks he did it except for his 2 partners'. And that's when they turned the FL into the damsel in distress that needed saving. Luckily this parted ended quickly but still irritating to me! This type of story has been done umpteen times and it's boring. Rather than do that to screw up a great series just keep doing what was working, murder of the week. ?

I would watch the first 15 episodes again, then just stop watching after that. The stories are fun. Not a whole lot to the solving of murder parts, since they seem to solve them way to easily, but it's fun. The only warning is this series is hella graphic in it's portrayal of the autopsies so you want to watch this on an empty stomach and maybe turn away from the screen and turn the volume down some times. Just a thought.

Good drama with a bad ending

I am normally not a fan of investigation drama, and only have watched a few medical dramas but started this drama because of Zhang Ruo Yun and the good review. However, I am left with a bit of bitter taste in my mouth. This drama has a really poor ending. But I would still recommend this drama for those liking investigation drama and the actors.

The good part: I really like the freshness of showing an investigation drama from a forensic examiner’s point of view - this helped me really to appreciate how much value this job provides to successfully solving a case. At the same, it also shows the bias and the disappreciation the general public has on this job. I very much like that each case is a small arc of 1-2 episodes, and the total episode number being only 20; much easier to watch. Each case is well crafted, containing a lot of learning on human anatomy and criminals investigations. Though there were some small illogicalities and exaggeration to create the dramatics, in general, the cases were interesting, mysterious, sometimes horrific and result not easy to predict.

The production was of high quality. I was surprised how realistic they reproduced all the operations and the dead buddies (parts), even more details to some of the medical dramas I have seen, to the degree that it is really gross in some episodes.

The plot clearly shows how the leads characters have grown together as a team. The cast chosen well - each of the leads having a distinguished character. The chemistry between the leads is amazing and the acting is outstanding. Zhang Ruo Yun and Li Xian’s acting is a no brainer but I was really impressed by Jia Jun Yan’s acting. She is probably one of the best young Chinese female actresses I have seen in drama so far in terms of acting skills. Also, the way she portraits the boyish character Li Da Bao was not at all unnatural (not like many other dramas in which a lot of the actress pretending to be “boyish” but then still ended up feminine). I would love to watch a drama in which she can play a feminine character.
I am also very satisfied with most of the supporting actors in each of the cases (maybe except for the police head), esp. the villains; some cases even displayed 3-dimensional characters which is difficult to do in only 1-2 episodes.

Now the not so great part: the execution and the plot of the ending/last case...
Normally the only problem I have with pure investigative drama is that the lead characters are normally not affected by the stories but often just a tool to showcase the cleverness of the cases. So I was happy to see that the last case affected Qin Ming personally. But it was just very badly executed... it contained way too many illogicalities and plot holes that one just cannot ignore them. Esp. it’s an investigation drama things need to be logical and the last 4 episodes just completely failed in doing that. I am not sure if the original novel has answers to all these gaps but it was the bad adaptation of because the producers want to squeeze everything in 4 episodes so leave all these out or what has happened here. For me, they needed another 2 episodes at least to fill those gaps. So unfortunately because of ending, I cannot give this drama a higher rating which is really a shame.

Here are some of the major plot holes for a laugh (not exhaustive):
1. Does the mole tooth have any meaning? If yes what is that?
2. Why would Chi Zi not want to revenge the police or the lawyer but a poor forensic examiner?
3. Who was Chi Zi’s husband and what was the story behind?
4. How come Dr. Qin never recognized Chi Zi in the Restaurant but instantly recognized her at the end?
5. How did Qing Ming’s dad die? From drug or from the fall or from both?
6. Why is the drug alone the evidence that the uncle is the murder? How did Chi Zi find this out? Was the uncle killed by Zhi Zi or Zhang Chao? Why would Zhang Chao kill for Zhi Zi and even willing to take all the blame for her?
7. How can Zhang Chao be confirmed as the killer only knowing that he has the same blood as Dr. Qin? Was it because of the glove and the scalpel? Why didn’t he destroy them?
8. Why was Dr. Qin not able to overthrow Chi Zi at the final scene? He is much stronger than her.
9. How did Lin Tao find them? He was not informed!
10. How can Ling Tao miss Chi Zi as he is professional police and she was standing back to him? Why didn’t Qin Ming break the water horse or the small lock instead with his pistole?
11. Which diamond ring is that stable that the diamond will not fall off after putting so
the force on it?
12. Why did Ling Tao let Qing Min do all the glass breaking job but was just standing there?
