One morning in mid-summer, a dead man with a knife in his chest is discovered on a park bench. The victim is Shinojima Taku, the vocalist of a famous rock band who had made waves after winning a literary prize for his first novel. At the meeting of the investigation task force, Director Tsurusaki gets excited to have the murder case of a well-known person. Because Shinojima’s award-winning novel was poorly-received, this gave rise to rumours that his win was rigged and he had received considerable criticism from book critics as well as the general public. While the attention is focused on Shinojima’s interpersonal relationships, the Tokyo Metropolitan Department’s detective with the best arrest rate, Inukai Hayato, finds it odd that there was barely blood spurted from the dead man although he was stabbed to death. The investigators hurriedly begin the investigation. At the same time, a man comes to the police precinct where the investigation task force is based to turn himself in for the murder. Calling himself a novelist, Arashiuma Shuto confesses that he killed Shinojima out of hate. However, Inukai and Kotegawa Kazuya do not believe his clumsy words during the interrogation. Meanwhile, Toyosaki Sayaka, Inukai’s only daughter with his ex-wife, is discharged from the hospital after a successful kidney transplant surgery three months ago. She makes the acquaintance of a popular top idol Shikura Kaede at a symposium that she began to attend by chance. Sayaka has few friends because of her long hospitalisation. Her friendship with Kaede deepens and she learns that Kaede belongs to the same entertainment agency as Shinojima. Inukai and Kotegawa continue investigating by questioning Shinojima’s wife; entertainment agency company president Takamori Hideo; and Vivre & Co, the publishing company that organised the literary prize. Then a letter claiming responsibility for the kidnapping of Shikura Kaede is delivered to Kanto Chuo TV. A photograph of Kaede bound in packing tape and her mobile phone are enclosed with the letter. The criminal demands that hostage negotiations be done through a news programme televised nationwide and designates Inukai to be the negotiator. What is the criminal’s true intention? ~~ Adapted from short story "Shiroi Genkō" from the 2013 novel "Nanairo no Doku" which was one of the "Keiji Inukai Hayato" series by Nakayama Shichiri.
