HALFWAY THROUGH THE DRAMA REVIEW
Although I do like the drama, the cute moments are not enjoyable. This is because I know that it is fake, he likes her because of her look. I feel really bad for her, seriously. How can she feel loved when she knows that the one this guy 'loves' is not her, it must be very heartbreaking.. I enjoy the moments she has with him as herself (let's call this A) more than the moments she has with him as the 'beautiful' version of herself (let's call this B).

FINISHED THE DRAMA REVIEW
In terms of story, I find the concept original and interesting. I have not seen any drama with this kind of story before. Moreover, it is also a drama with beautiful takehome messages: 1. Never judge a book by its cover; 2. It does not matter whether someone is pretty or not, they will look pretty when you love them. However, despite the beautiful message and original storyline, I do find the first half of the drama kinda uncomfortable to watch. This is because (reason stated above).

In terms of acting/casts, I love all the casts. While some people have mentioned that the main lead is not likable. I, personally, find him likable. Moreover, although this is a web drama with only 6 episodes, I can clearly see the character development of all of the characters. I can see them grow and change for the better. Salute for the writer. Tbh, I do have a slight SLS in this drama, however, since I find the main lead also likable, it is not that severe for me. Hope the other guy will find someone for him too!

In terms of music, I dont think there is any memorable or particular ost for this drama. All the music seem like a background song for the scenes, not really an OST. In short, there is no particular music/song I will think of when thinking of this drama.

In terms of rewatch value, I dont think I will rewatch it. It is nice for a one time watch, not so much of a rewatch.

In conclusion, I do recommend this drama to all of you! Please do be patient for the first half tho hehe

I have a lot of mixed feelings towards this drama. A lot of things it did well, some things not so much.

STORY:
First of all, the drama itself doesn't really care about the sense of the story. It's very rushed (well, it's a short web series drama, but still, lol) and doesn't really pay attention to key elements like the whole logic of the ring and how it actually works. Nevertheless, I'm cutting it some slack since it IS a web series.
The overall message of "You don't have to be beautiful to be loved, when someone loves you, you are beautiful in their eyes" is very important. Some people call this drama shallow + for Korea's beauty standard, but being honest, not everyone is beautiful on the outside, it's just not how it is. There's all different kinds of shapes and body types we were born with that we are stuck with, but they make us who we are. We can't change it, but when someone truthfully loves us, they will see us more beautiful than any model could ever be, and that's the truth. I think this message in the drama was done very well for a measly 6 episodes. If this drama was over 10 episodes, it would easily lose it's meaning and purpose, in my opinion. The message is not something that takes a long time to present.

CHARACTERS:
I was indifferent towards both leads. On one hand, I would love the female lead's determination, stubbornness, and just being an overall enthusiastic character, but I'd get fed up with her being very shallow and thinking, "Well, I might as well be someone else, I just want his love. I don't care about him actually loving ME." But that's because she's never thought it was ever possible. She's gotten used to her being a "backstage" person and thought she'd die alone. She's still young and she has a lot of immature thoughts, but that just shows her character has flaws. Her growth wasn't very well executed, but again for 6 episodes it did work somehow. As for the male lead, he was EXTREMELY shallow, only caring about a girl's looks, but throughout the story he was gaining character and he was showing his own type of struggle, no matter how shallow it was. You can think this all sounds stupid, BUT keep in mind: both these leads who had these ideals their ENTIRE life, changed just by simply falling in love with each other in a short period of time. They aren't the greatest characters, but they represent their situation the best I could ever see it presented. Their chemistry was bad and nonexistent up until the last 2 episodes, in my opinion, but it's probably because of the fact absolutely no development or the message that the story was trying to portray came into place until the last 2 episodes. As far as the side characters, they were cute and gave me a bit of chuckles. The writers showed that even the side characters had their struggles. They weren't perfect. There was no evil villain or cliche backstabbing friend in this drama. This drama felt very human to me and accurate on society nowadays when it comes to the topics discussed in the drama.

ACTING/CAST:
They were pretty average. The male lead's actor was a SWOON. Literal definition. There were some scenes I think could've been better but I think it was probably the director's decision rather than the actual actors/actresses.

MUSIC:
Average... sometimes very annoying. The times at which they chose to play music felt out of place, sometimes the volume would go up loud out of no where trying to display emotion, but it reaaaaaally annoyed me. Yes, I know dramas usually do the cliche emotional music scenes, but these were just really out of place and waaaaay too much. Could've turned the music lower and made it less dramatic and instead just what the scene actually implied.

REWATCH VALUE:
I would totally give this a watch again on a weekend. It's just really short and cute. If I ever felt bad about my appearance a particular day, or worrying I'd die alone, this would be something I'd watch. It's lighthearted, not too serious, but still cute and emotional when you look at the overall picture.

OVERALL:
Being 100% honest, this is something really good to watch when you're feeling bad about yourself. It's only 6 episodes and rather short but gets to the entire point rather fast. If you're looking for a short but meaningful reminder in life, (because well, we ALL need reminders time to time) this is the perfect drama for you. It's worth watching just for the last 2 episodes.

I first started this web drama just because Kim Seul Gi was the main. Not even bothering checking the summary.
And I won't lie, at first I was not sold. AT. ALL. KSG’s character is supposed to be ugly, so ugly there’s no way anyone would fall in love with her, especially not a “pretty boy”. It would have made more sense to describe her character as “average” but irradiating such a low self-confidence that it would impact her relationships and how others see her. Also her character keeps wallowing in self-pity, especially at the beginning of the drama. It was just very cringeworthy.
However, once I passed the first half mark, I started really getting into this drama. After all, the aim of this series is pretty sweet: it essentially criticizes the fact that “beauty” is so predominant in our society - and in this case especially in South Korea. Also they managed to wrap up the drama in a sweet way, instead of the hot mess I was dreading.
So yes, it was far from perfect, but I still don’t regret watching this drama. Actually, I may even rewatch it, bc I’m cheesy trash.

This drama was made for web-viewing. The 21-episodes format is the original web-drama version. It is combined together into 6 episodes for normal drama length. So, you may come across 21 eps or 6 eps - both are complete versions. Now that I've cleared the confusion re the length of this drama, let's get to the review.......

Story: Average looking girl with an average height has a low-self esteem problem with her looks. It didn't help that others around her passed negative comments about her looks too (yes! society is cruel this way)! She had never dated before and has this huge crush on the school's handsomest and most talented guy (who doesn't eh?). Her mum seeing how down and depressed she was with her looks and inability to date, passed on a family secret about a ring that can make the person whom you like see you as his/her ideal partner. She was at first skeptical but later was excited when the ring actually worked. The school's heartthrob fell for her. Life's starting to look and feel good. But is that true? You know what they always say.......trouble in paradise.....nothing's ever perfect!

This is a short sweet story that all young women who suffer from low-self esteem about their looks should watch. It has a positive and uplifting message at the end about love and beauty. In a nutshell, it nails the old saying "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder"!

Frankly, I wouldn't have watched this drama if not for me being on sick leave for two days. Feeling urrghhh from a bout of flu, I wanted something light, sweet, uplifting and quick. After reading reviews, I decided to watch this drama. I wasn't disappointed. For a short drama, it's worth the one whole day I spent on my coach - covered with blankets and pillows, a full box of tissue for my runny nose, warm tea, yummy snacks and heater on. It's an ideal drama for relaxation. Doesn't require any brain cells to decipher what's going on. Doesn't incite any strong negative emotions such as sadness, anger, frustration etc. There's no evil character whom you wish you could punch. For me, the drama ends with me thinking "Ah~~~! How nice and sweet!" So, if you are after a quick, relaxing and sweet drama, this one is for you!

Acting/Cast: There's no odd or awkward acting despite the relatively young cast. Everyone did well.

Music: This is a short web-drama. No OSTs worth mentioning here.

Re-watch value: High because of its brevity and uncomplicated story.

Overall: Highly recommended for those who's after a short drama that delivers all the beloved KDrama staples: romance, handsome male lead, triangle love and happily ever after.

An unexpected gem

I thought this drama was just going to be a quick, funny watch, and though there was lots of humor there were also many unexpectedly emotional and moving moments. I think I understand the wide discrepancy in reviews: if you tend to appreciate messages like "everyone is beautiful, we're all goddesses," you might dislike the drama. But if, like me, you prefer acknowledging that not everyone is physically attractive but we all still have worth, positive attributes, and can be loved, you'll probably enjoy this! It can be startling to watch something where the female lead is called plain or ugly, or where the male lead doesn't gawk at her beauty or tell her how gorgeous she is, but I found it both refreshing and authentic that his feelings and attraction developed over time. I'm surprised by the reviews saying Se Gun didn't mature or grow - the whole point was that he used to focus solely on looks, chasing pretty women and never being satisfied, but in the end it was Nan Hee's personality and how she made him feel that he was drawn to, rather than his "dream girl" with the cold attitude. I liked how in the drama's climax, he encouraged her to find her own confidence rather than buttering her up with sappy compliments about how she's actually a dazzling beauty. Definitely spent an enjoyable afternoon watching this.

After all the dramas/movies showing off beauty, this is like medicine.

The most meaningful mini-drama I have ever watched.

"You don't need to be beautiful to be loved.
When you love someoe, s/he looks beautiful to you."

You shouldn't miss it, pretty please

I remember loving this when I first watched it in high school. For years, I claimed this drama as one of my favorites and always recommended it to other people. I decided to watch it again because I wanted to feel something. But my opinion about the drama has changed.

I am not complaining about how the they wrote Nanhee's story—someone who is constantly beaten up by other people about her unconventional appearance and is often stripped off of opportunities because she doesn't fit their standards. No matter how much we hate to see it, this issue happens in real life. It may seem like an exaggeration, especially when the actress playing Nanhee is actually pretty, but this happens to some people. And I love how they portrayed it. Those with low confidence about their appearance would definitely feel for Nanhee.

I'm mainly bothered by Segun and Nanhee's story. Segun was really rude to Nanhee without the ring; insulting her a lot of times and harshly saying that he's not attracted to her. While I do understand that his harshness was meant to showcase Nanhee's reality, what baffles me is that this is Segun we're talking about—her love interest. It's really weird for me to see a man constantly beat up a woman about her looks then end up falling for her, dating her for real, and everyone else being okay with it as if he never treated her badly. Not reciprocating her feelings was valid, but the insults were just unbearable. Imagine dating someone who could have sworn they would never like your face.

I still enjoyed some of the scenes, but I guess it just made me confused whether I want them to end up together or not. I didn't feel as giddy as I did before.

Bad Writing/script Ruined the Rom Com

LIKES:
The actors/actresses were well selected for this show.
Kim Seul Gi as the FL was nice to see.
Art drawing scene with the ‘model’ being shirtless, was an Easter egg moment.
Cinematography and location selection were both good.
A typical Rom Com.

Concept was similar to the American movie Shallow Hal; don’t judge a book by the cover, beauty isn’t just skin deep, Ugly Duckling.
FX were decent, but nothing spectacular [for example: the magic of the ring as it was activated].
Costumes were well executed, especially for the fashion show.
Music wasn’t noticeable, but neither was it annoying.

DISLIKES:
WRITING
They didn’t make the FL ugly, she was pretty, not gorgeous like the real Mi Joo (actress Soon So Hee), but too pretty to pull off the UGLY concept.
No real character development for FL or ML. There was a very little bit, but it was too low key to be impactful. FL doesn’t’ love herself, but just realizes the morality of her deception. Her character needed more time to actually have concrete change. ML had a bit of growth in how he saw the FL, but still needed to change her appearance to realize all the things he liked about her.
The explanation the viewer is given for how the Fashion Design class suddenly accepts a Life Drawing student, is absolutely dumb. Also being able to “sketch/design” clothing, doesn’t mean you know how to sew or produce a completed garment. This concept within the drama was badly executed.
The love triangle was disappointing too.
Due to the time frame of each episode and limited episodes, the characters had little substance and therefore the impact of the conclusion was lack lustre.
The Ending was okay, but was too typical to have impact or even highlight the moral of the story.

DIRECTING
Directing was okay, but definitely had room for improvement [pacing of scenes, some reactions of leads were too delayed].

OVERALL
It was the writing and bad execution of the story that gave this such a low rating from me. Also it needed longer episodes to really develop it. Not all manga’s can be adapted to live action. However it was an easy quick watch. If you like the concept, I would recommend the Rom Com show “A Little Thing Called First Love (2019)” from China. This show executes the concept of ugly duckling, perfectly, although it is really long (36 episodes that are 45 minutes each).

Love yourself to be loved

This drama is so damn good.
It's so short yet says so much without trying two hard to convey a message, it is still light hearted and funny.

Ofc our male lead is the typical player, but he's not afraid to show that he is vulnerable . And his actions later are so much understable i would be mad too if i was him.
But he still loves her for who she is and not how she looks like ( wich i find absourt, Seulgi is su pretty)

And the female lead , i love her and i feel with her, her struggles remind me of my own ones and i also find her so unbelievably funny.

The only bad thingy in this drama is that it's so short, should have been a full fleged 16 ep series

The final series of the main drama contains the fantasy element as the other two, but it has some mystery as well. The story is okay, but there were some things that bothered me: first of all, the drama condemned it's leading lady as ugly, when she clearly wasn't. The beauty queen was model like, but still the girl wasn't so ugly. Then the romance was odd. I mean, clearly the guy fell for her looks and wanted to date her because of her appearance. So, wasn't the girl bothered that she was lying to him or that he was falling for someone who wasn't her? Other than that, the drama was good and interesting, with the thrill of the guy finding her out keeping it interesting, though the ending was weak, as the story was roughly concluded. So, 5 out of 10.

Appearances matter

I think this drama proves that when it comes to looks we can all be quite shallow, so suspend beliefs and prejudices and enjoy.

Handsome male lead dates girls purely on their looks and in a very short time (average 2 months) realises their personality is not attractive enough to continue so drops them.
Our FL has never measured up to society's standards of good looking and in her youth was bullied and teased (she assumes) for her looks so has low confidence in this area.
Set the scene for the beautiful ML to be the model for her art class and she becomes in lust for him.

The fantasy of her wearing a ring that cloaks her real appearance allows her the chance to experience an adorable guy being devoted to her. The fact that no one else can see her transformation is the twist. She luckily stays true to her own personality, probably, because she realises this is a temporary transformation and not likely to last. ML finds that her unaffected personality is very attractive and falls deeply in love.

I liked the tension of when she is exposed but not the execution. The 2FL is also given some sympathy as her backstory is revealed.
The ML is also shown as vulnerable due to his relationship to his mother. The FL is the luckiest because she has very loving parents who are good role models for love.
The story is entertaining and as a fantasy drama it works well.
