Vanguard (2020)

It’s a Jackie Chan movie. And it’s a silly thing, sillier than usual, even for Jackie Chan. Seriously, there are CGI hyenas in it, I kid you not. But there’s also Yang Yang, so there is that, true.

And, gosh, action stuff really suits Yang Yang. Like really. He looked and moved like a real soldier. But even though his character was a bodyguard, he sure was the damsel in distress in this movie. First, the heroine shot him with a tranquilizer by mistake in the middle of a fight so when he got her away from the bad guys, she had to take care of him and get him to safety because, well, he fell asleep. And then, when they were attacked again, he got hit over the head protecting her and they were both captured. And then, he got put into a bomb vest, just for the kidnappers’ kicks. So... yeah. I guess the filmmakers realized that Yang Yang suffered nicely. Or something.

Overall, the movie is nothing to write home about. There’s just way too much CGI. Even most of the car chases are CGI. And because of that, the most adrenaline fueled scene is the one where Vanguard comes to save Yang Yang’s character and the girl because that’s mostly genuine, old-fashioned action. Too bad, it could’ve been a good one. Oh well...

Jackie Chan & Yang Yang can’t go wrong

What I love:
The cast and their character portrayal
No mushy romance & love story
Action packed but not gruesome
Filmed in Middle East - remote locations in telling a story is always a plus for viewers
Story is pretty simple but the way action was executed, it made the story exciting.
Love they did alternatives in using animals in filming and made it obvious they are not real to avoid animal rights complaints. I rather they did it this way than go through all the trouble so No, this is seen by others as a negative But I see it as a plus. Entire filming were excellent that small flaw like this (which avoided any issue with activist so it served the production well) can be overshadowed by the action packed movie.

What I didn’t care for:
I think the international actors could have been chosen better. Mediocre in acting.

Really?

Ok, there were MANY unbelievable moments in this film, but the scene that really had me flailing my arms in disbelief was the scene where the car ran through all those jugs of clean distilled water. I mean this takes place in Africa, right? Where I assume most parts are lacking in clean water, it was a little too much. It’s like seeing iphones in a kdrama. Everything was a little over the top, silly and fun but a little too silly and contrived. Even Jackie Chan at times was like, “really?!?” “Wth” and he wasn’t talking about the situation, he was referring to the movie.

I watched. I got tired. Speed 3 Jacke Chan style. Extremely spectacular, sometimes stained. If you want to see it because of Yang Yang or Zuzhaiting you will be disappointed. No participant will have a continuous time longer than 5 minutes. There are no complex characters or character development. There is good, there is bad, there is father, there is a friend, there is an enemy, there is a beautiful woman, there is action and action and action ....
I cried with laughter ... but sometimes I was more in pain.
Your chances of watching again are zero.
The characters worked hard in this film.
All my appreciation to the actors.

Yang-yang and Jackie Chan

Yeay!!! Finally finished watch this movie. First i saw the poster i can't believe Yang-yang can play in 1 movie with Jackie Chan. But good for him Ok. Now I've finished watched this here my comment:

First this movie have one of the worst dialogue & dubbing. The dialogue is so stiff & when you hear it just like people reading scrip, especially the English dialogue. But opposite from timotey, I think this drama not as silly as other Jackie Chan movie. Just remembering my cousin said, Jackie Chan is old, so there aren't too many action anymore. Yeah agreed with timotey, this movie like made for Yang-yang, he so cool with all the action here.

But yeah the story itself I can't say good. Just like too many coercion that sometimes doesn't make sense. And the SGI also not so good. Many scene we can see like very unnatural SGI. But the scene with the car is still quite cool , after all it's expensive sport car ^_^

Just Action packed movie more American in styling than Chinese

I watched it because of Jacki chan and Yang Yang ,, to be honest ,, Jacki Chan wasn't that good even as a boss in the movie ,, it was meh ,, his action scenes is something of reminiscing about old jacki Chan action movies in America nothing more
also the nature and the styling in the movie seemed like American action movie ,, it doesn't have chinese tropes or Chinese emotional scenes that makes them unique ,, it was all explosions ,, car chasing and fights but may be the famously CGI chinese edits even the animals were crappy CGI ,, It was so obvious
the story had potential of some romance but it didn't show any but moment or two ,,, it had potential for emotional scenes but they cut it way too short ,,, it was good amusing watch ,, funny sometimes with the flying skate board soldier seemed from marvel universe super hero or Captain china wtf ??!!
what is captain china ?? they has their own heroes they didn't need American's marvel crap
Yang Yang was amazing in his actions scenes but they didn't give him much space to act in romantic or even emotional scenes like when he was trying to save his friend
Also representing Arabs was hamulating as usual ,,, more like America represents Arabs ,, I'm an arab so I felt offended
overall it's not bad movie but expect more actions like Americans do it than chinese heart felt emotional drama

A one time watch :)

Just go into knowing this is just a fun action movie. If your a fan of Jackie Chan or Yang Yang or both then yes check it out!
Definitely a one time watch for me :)

Action packed movie

Plus point that surpasses many factors.... It's a Jackie Chan movie!! It's filled with action packed with a mixture of comedy (like all Jackie Chan movies). The additional parts would be that Yang Yang and a few other named people are within.

Overall, I find this movie great and also funny at certain moments, filled with action and especially love movies that have a mixture of variety of languages within - along with the English subtitles for better understanding of the other languages. Personally, I feel that we should have more of these mixture of variety of languages and places in a movie. It was feeling quite strange - for me - to hear Jackie Chan conversing in Mandarin though as I have always only watched all of his movies in Cantonese. But still enjoyed the movie nonetheless. The entire casts also did a good job bringing the movie to life. It definitely is something I would watch again, but only because I really enjoyed the movie. There were various reviews commenting about CGIs in the movie, but oh come on.... CGIs have LONG EXISTED in many other movies, so why the heck are you complaining and whining about some CGI hyenas / animals?! Better a CGI of an animal than having a real animal and then some wanky animal activists wailing about animal abuse just for entertainment purposes!
