Review of A Place in the Sun to Date

There is much “Makjang” in this drama—particular absurdity being the “oh well” attitude of family members to the grandfather’s murderous background, including a free pass by the one who received the attempt on his life. Naaaahhhh...that would never happen. But for a 100-episode drama, this one is pretty good and while it isn’t stellar marks, it earned the highest rating I have ever given a long drama. But it almost seems unfair to rate the long “soap opera” dramas with the quality of 16-24 episode dramas, because they can’t really compete. There simply are no soap opera dramas that aren’t automatically downgraded in ratings; because excessive episodes requires dragging plots, recycled subplots, excessive flashbacks, and scenes fillled with minutia. You also don’t typically see many (if any) A-level actors and actresses on the long dramas. Nevertheless, long kdramas are still light years better than U.S. Daytime soap operas..the armpit of TV programming. So if you have to choose between the two, choose Korean.
