River (2012)

Not for the light hearted, but a very good movie

There are so many controversial topics covered in this one movie. Here's a few trigger warning just so you have an idea of what you're getting into: dubious sexual consent, animal abuse/death (not depicted), mental illness, bullying, eating disorders.

Okay with that out of the way, this movie is a commentary on the lives of a group of Japanese teenagers in an industrial town. As you can see from the warnings, it is a heavy movie and is realistic. Each character is dealing with their own issues and they're not exactly handling them well.. it is a good movie, and I enjoyed watching it even though there are uncomfortable parts, especially the sexual content for me.

It has a lot to say though, if you get what I mean. There's a lot to unpack and somethings get missed on a first glance.
