A Jade Drama with a Dent

Love Like White Jade (白玉思无瑕) is a drama produced by MangoTV. Love Like White Jade is a historical romcom drama mixed with some elements of mystery. The story narrative mainly revolves around Jiang Baiyu (played by 张耀 – Zhang Yao ) who puts on a façade of being a playboy, however behind he disguises himself as the hero Shen Qingli to find the murderer of his father 7 years ago. The female lead is Shui Wuxia (played by万鹏 – Wan Peng), Shui Wuxia is a maid from Langya Hall, Wuxia is an excellent maid in every aspect. “Maids” from Langya Hall tasks is to help young childe to excel in their studies, basically being a secretary/ assistant, instead of being a “maid” who cleans and cook. From then one the narrative unfolds, with them falling in love, developing friendship, and finding the truth behind 7 years ago.

Plot: The drama plot is straightforward and uncomplicated which makes viewers understand it easily; it does not have frequent flashbacks. The pacing of this drama is excellent at the beginning ¾ of the drama. On the ¾ of the drama, the story unfolds casually and not rushed. The element of romance, comedy, friendship is blended seamlessly, even though the mystery genre is weak. There is not enough building and logic on the mystery/ criminal cases, the mystery story filler also has plenty of plot holes; which resulted in a weak ending. The ending lacked climax and intensity, as the truth was uncovered in the most ridiculous manner and the antagonist was finished so easily.

There are 3 couples in this drama, and I like how all couples supported each other no matter what. And there is tremendous character growth in each person and couple, they grow together to become a better person. Moreover, there are no excessive misunderstandings between the couples. Misunderstandings are solved in a mature way, and the other 2 couple's love and chemistry are also very strong. Also, what I like about this drama, is that the Jiang brothers did not scheme each other, instead, they had each other backs. The friendship part in this drama is not really that deep, but when one of them is in trouble, all of them had their backs. That is probably what I liked; it was realistic. Every one of them had their own life and routine rather than sticking with each other 24/7, but when any critical moment comes, they are there. And I can also sense a little feminism in this drama, which I LOVE!!

Cinematography and CGI: This drama cinematography is just like another idol drama cinematography, with excessive lighting, close-up shots, quick transitions, and a bright color scheme. There is nothing particularly commendable about the cinematography. The martial arts scene in the drama is decent for a low-budget drama, it is not too sloppy but it is not commendable too. There are some fighting scenes and qinggong (light skills) in the drama that I find kinda funny (where Qingli and Wuxia fly after throwing money on the streets). For the fighting scenes, it was okay, the choreographed actions are mediocre. Moving on, the CGI in this drama is bad but okay at the same time. As this is a low-budget drama, you shouldn’t expect grandiose CGI, choreographed sequence, etc. The CGI was bad, like for example the scene where Qingli and Wuxia met at the roof, the CGI was like from an animation movie. But with the combination of Qingli and Wuxia outfit color scheme, it did not become bad, it becomes bearable yet funny at the same time.

Acting: Zhang Yao and Wan Peng’s acting is commendable!! Zhang Yao manages to show the 2 sides of Jiang Baiyu, the playboy and Shen Qingli, the marvelous hero. Wan Peng also did a good job in portraying her role. The secondary actor and actresses also did a good job, even though some of their actings were awkward, it was still bearable. Not so bad, to the point that you cannot continue to watch.

There is nothing particular to be remembered about the music, the music fits in the scenario well, but it is not memorable. The only unique thing about the music is the opening music. The opening music is really upbeat and modern, unlike other historical dramas. Probably by hearing the opening music, you can guess what the genre of the drama is and where it is going to.

In conclusion, Love Like White Jade is a good drama to watch when you are looking for something light-hearted that makes you smile from time to time. Watching this drama does not require 100% concentration, you can watch this drama while doing other activities. As for the setbacks, the setbacks in the drama are not really visible and give off a big impact on the drama if you do not pay attention to it. Overall, it is a GOOD WATCH!!

P.s. Jiang Baiyu/ Shen Qingli's voice dubber in this drama feels so similar to Zhang Yao’s character in Love in Between, which is another plus point for me!!

It was cute until it got old...

From the opening theme song you'll already know that this isn't your typical historical drama... it's essentially just a rom com (with a lot of comedy) but with historical costumes.
I really loved this show from the beginning until I want to say somewhere in episode mid-20's, and then it lost all its charm because of the stupid draggy stuff that unfortunately happens when drama-writing gets lazy. And the ending was too cliche and not even mildly satisfying, making the middle draggy plot not worth enduring in my opinion :(
And from the behind-the-scenes, we know the drama-writing is pretty lazy. The director commented on how he had to change a few scenes because the script wasn't realistic enough.

This show reunites Wan Peng and Zhang Yao from When We Were Young, giving them completely different feels. If you shipped the 2ML x 1FL couple from that show, you'll find this main pairing satisfying I guess. In this sense, it was an okay watch for some sugar and fluff (and typical rom com predictability).

The songs are pretty fun (and you might find videos of the leads dancing to the catchy opening theme if you look for some behind the scenes)

The story has good bones. Some mystery and plenty of romance just the way I like it. i think it fell apart during the 36 episodes but it was not horrible enough to make me lose interest and want to drop it. I loved the pretty colours in the scenery. even though the costuming, props and scenery is not true historical. Don't expect everything to be accurate. It is just a fun romp. There are given a team of intrepid investigators who had their own romances going on and none of the characters were annoying. Their stories were pretty much well thought out.
I thought the hidden identity added a lot of fun … I loved the subtle moments when they acknowledge she should figure it out but then showed why she discounted it. It stopped me from thinking if she is so smart she should have figured it out!
The pretty martial arts and flying to the rooftops , fan service… all A+ I like that the ML was willing to be by the FL’s side in whichever way she wanted. His delivery of his role played a big part in making me watch till the end. He was hooked from the beginning to the end by his FL (and vice-versa) and I love those kinds of romances. Where they just know.
The smiles and whimsical but committed treatment of their relationship was perfectly balanced. Their natural chemistry is evident. They look at each other in a “connected” way. When he called her “Shui Ge” (Brother Shui) which sounded like SUGAR in English , I just melted. I swear the writers meant this to sound that way and whenever he said it with his smirk… well… I wanted to hear him say it again.
Even though the FL had another love interest for a spell, I felt it was not your typical silly love triangle.
Part of the reason I am giving this show a 10 for trying to incorporate diversity themes in a respectful way. It was fun and pretty and I loved the messaging… For me what makes a show special ( even when the story wavered and the execution faltered… ) is there seemed to be a concerted effort to show strong female characters and include differently abled individuals.
We have a female gang boss as a female business person. I loved how the ML handled the FL’s visual impairment. It was very matter of fact what you can do for a person who is visually impaired. Also physical mobility of the brother was portrayed to promote dignity of person.
Overall I think the dramas was smarter and a better story in the earlier episodes. It definitely could have been done in less episodes. Towards ending it got a bit uninteresting but I was definitely wanting to move through the episodes even if some parts were not as nicely paced. The romance always hooks me.
This a wonderful little escape into a romantic fantasy with an ending that supports my view that the writers wanted to showcase equity in their little drama. Well done.

Binge worthy, bittersweet ending

Let's start with how funny this drama was for about the first 22 episodes until the serious plot came in. I kept laughing until my belly hurt at most of the scenes. The story was pretty good. Unlike most other dramas with evil elderly character supremacy, this one had very kind and loving elders, pitiful ones at that. About chemistry, the kiss scenes between the main leads lacked chemistry. THE FL COULD NOT KISS AT ALL. It didn't really evoke melancholy feelings in me maybe because it was meant to be a comedy, but i did feel pity in some scenes.

About the music, the opening song was so ridiculously catchy but hey i liked it after i got used to it because i don't understand chinese, so no hate please, i judge on the basis of music. The ending theme was so soothing and pleasant.

Now, spoiler alert: The younger brother was the sweetest character but somehow ended with the most pathetic fate that he didn't deserve at all. The villain was pretty damn pitiful and wasn't a complete evil character.

Overall: It is good for a one time watch, it's plot isn't crazy absurd or random, gives plenty of laughs, has a bittersweet ending. So I'd suggest watching it once.

Very very very very light hearted

This really is very light hearted drama. If you want a serious mystery with romance it's not for you. But if u are looking for a fun time with friends.. you can give a try...

I really miss the interaction between friends in historical dramas/costume drama.. this gave me allmost full satisfaction.. it's has the friendly chats that I missed in love is all and fake princess..

Other good point is I was able to enjoy the daily comedy..

ofcourse for any other drama there will be doubt of what is going to happen that keep us from a full laugh.. but not here . I really enjoyed it a lot. Didn't even knew how it finished.. it's just because I like this theme..
There are chances others will feel it slow and not interesting..

I was hesitant because of 32ep and 45min.. so let me tell most ep are 30-35min and if u like the things I mentioned can give a try..

And the starting song is the only reason I gave it a try.. otherwise I would have missed this, which really is of my taste for sure... Loved the starting song....

Spoiler

The ending do give little heart ace but it show how good our leads are.. so fine..

I would have given 10, if the end was little more convincing and they have added one more friendly chat of the 8(including baxi and dr.xio) after baiug complete his studies, fangs shop hit off and little brother fully or almost recovered in hau..hall.. at the end

Curiosity kills the cat (and I'm wasting my time)

I don't understand the excellent comments on this series :( :( :(

PLOT: 2 young, highly qualified tutors come to the house of young nobles to guide them in their exam. The eldest is rebellious, indolent, futile (but at night, he plays masked vigilante and searches for his father's murderer), while the youngest is serious and disciplined. Relationships will be formed with the two tutors (FL and FL2) during the investigations that the quartet will carry out.

We understand from the opening OST that we should not take this series seriously. However, the number of inconsistencies, insane behavior, to obvious coincidences,... is unbearable!!

CONS:
- poorly written, senseless story. AGACING!!! The characters are supposed to be intelligent, so why are they acting like morons?
- low budget series
- no chemistry within the CL. I don't doubt the talent of the actors, but they can't make us buy into this poorly conceived story.
- inappropriate subtittles: I doubt that in a historical drama, they would be able to identify Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (discovered at the end of the 20th century). Seriously ???

=> I went to the end out of pure curiosity, but I feel like I wasted my time!
********************************************************************************************

A cute historical romantic comedy♡ (♪ Your damn charm is taking my life away ♪)

Story (10/10):
The daylight Jiang Bai Yu and night-time Shen Qing Li enlightens the story and bring your curiosity to find out when Wu Xia will find out Jiang Bai Yu is Shen Qing Li. The comedy and the chemistry between Wu Xia and Bai Yu is really funny, always making me laugh, cute romcom that will make your day especially if you want to take a break from all those sad dramas you watched haha uwu I love how Wu Xia is strong and good in martial arts, recommended if you love strong female lead :) Our playful Bai Yu seems like he don't know much during the day but when he becomes Shen Qing Li, he is so cool with his strong martial arts, and of course, a smart and kind heroine who save people but meanwhile, he uses his identity to investigate his father's mysterious death. Wu Xia's feelings waver between Shen Qing Li and Jiang Bai Yu as the story progresses with Bai Yu's character development as Wu Xia starts changing his life.
Don't worry, there is no annoying love triangle here :) All the characters are very encouraging and they support each other as best friends, so I can say we have a beautiful friendship between all the characters here ^_^

Acting/Cast (10/10):
Our two main leads, Wan Peng and Gala Zhang are from When We Were Young (2018), but this time Gala Zhang is the main lead hehe♡ In my opinion, I love their chemistry in both Love Like White Jade and When We Were Young (2018), seems that we can really see their friendship getting closer in Love Like White Jade :) All the romance including other characters are really sweet, it's my first time watching Liu Yu Han and 安冬 (An Dong), they are so cute too <3 I also love how Gala Zhang can portray daylight Jiang Bai Yu and night-time Shen Qing Li differently and attractively, Gala gege, you're taking my life away haha uwu Yes, I love how whenever there is Wan Peng, our comedy blossoms with joy haha, love watching Wan Peng's dramas♡

Music (10/10):
I have to admit that I'm shocked and surprised to watch the opening song (Nv Xia Rao Ming) at the start, I had this oh my god expression when I first watched the opening song. As I continue watching more episodes, I began to love the opening song, I was basically translating the opening song every time I listen till I decided to add English subtitles uwu I realized the opening song is very uniquely funny haha XD and addicting too, I just couldn't stop repeating the song the entire day. I love how the opening song is so relatable at some moments, like when you want to forget someone, and your friend tell you to forget her/him but you have entirely no idea how to forget and you kept thinking about him/her till your body get worse day by day oops >_<
The ending song 'If (如果)' is nice too, I love the lyrics, yes, it's romantic, hehe, I never skip both the opening and ending songs when I was watching all the episodes :D

Rewatch value (10/10):
I would love to rewatch in the future again especially after I watch a heart-breaking series, it will definitely cheer me up uwu The comedy is really awesome and funny, I felt like I laughed too much sometimes that I laughed till I cried oops. Not only the comedy but the romance is great too.

Overall (10/10):
If you love sweet romcom, go ahead and try watching, I'm sure the comedy, romance and mystery will keep you watching :D Have fun watching Love Like White Jade, it absolutely will make you laugh haha XD I enjoyed watching Love Like White Jade and I hope you all too!! :D

Average rom com with some mystery

Apart from the romance plot involving 3 couples, part of the story is about their investigations into some clandestine activities involving using people to experiment on drugs without their consent.

The series starts of pretty well, but the romance parts of the story and the investigations are not very nicely integrated. The main characters, Bai Yu and Wu Xia, are investigating separate cases (the death of Bai Yu's father and the apparent death of Wu Xia's brother) that have them pursuing the same targets. That's fine, but when we see a focus on the romance, the investigations disappear into the background, only to appear again whenever the writers feel like it. Additionally too little is shown of how Bai Yu's father died or what caused Wu Xia to think that her brother has been killed. I'm left with the impression that this is a clumsily executed attempt at heightening the suspense before the revelation. The limited revelation seems so deliberate that it's yelling "We can't give the story away yet!"

As for the characterization, most of the main characters are likable, the sort one is likely to find in a rom com but with some degree of complexity. Still, I'm left wondering how Bai Yu's teacher became his teacher, what she's doing as a dancer (is it a cover for her actual activities), and why she is on his side in going after the one who has killed his father. At times, she seems to have a personal vendetta against the bad guys, but there is a lack of elaboration and sometimes she seems to be simply around to help Bai Yu. (Also, what has she taught him? I have the impression that she is his martial arts teacher, but we don't really get to see her showcasing her skills.)

Then comes the plot twist of sorts when the mastermind behind the clandestine drug experimentation is revealed. It is a twist that one is all too likely to see coming, so much so that there isn't even any effort at making the moment of revelation seem shocking. It's a pity that the writers have not channeled their energy into the investigations plotline. It makes for a fairly interesting story, and the "twist" regarding the mastermind can be avoided altogether. After all, despite serving to weave together different events, the twist makes the tone and characterization rather uneven.

Love Like White Jade is an ok rom com if it happens to be your genre, but don't expect anything exceptional from it. It is best enjoyed when you want something light and sweet without a focus on heavy, dark themes.

Good For A Rainy Day

The drama start with a 2 very strong leading ladies and a interesting leading man. The story captivates you because the leading females are brought to the home to help the 2 young men in the home. The leading male character has a mystery secret and and gives a hard time to the leading female character. Of course they finally start liking each other. I really enjoy the story until around the 20th episode were the episode began to get redundant. I like the 3 couples and how they evolve threw the story. I wish the writer would have kept his concentration and not add episodes that were not really needed. The actors did a great job in their performance and they seem to have a good chemistry among them. There was a few cute comedy scenes and a few romantic ones. But some of the comedy was very silly. I would have like a stronger ending for all the couples and not have the mystery resolve in the last 20 minutes to give more time to really know what the couples were going to do. Overall it is a light drama to watch you might skip some episodes.

Sweet RomCom

This is a very light hearted drama. It gives you mystery, romance and a hint of comedy. The cast was good and the fight scenes were enjoyable.

The ML and FL had good chemistry. The ML did a fairly good job as a righteous hero and a spoilt playboy. The plot is pretty straightforward, The ML and FL are on a quest to get revenge for there loved ones.

There are two other couples in this drama and as each relationship develops you see the characters grow. Friendships are strengthen as the group faces challenges together.

I loved that the FL is smart, skilled in martial arts and is the best student of her master ( who happens to run an all women institution where the women are sent to help young masters in nobel homes). However, I was able to figure out who the main villian was and the motive when he first appeared in his black hooded coat, so its a bit predictable.

The ending is happy as each couple are still together. However, if not for the sweet scenes with each couple as they resolve their issues, it would've been a bit boring.

This is a drama to watch to help cheer you up a bit after watching a drama with a sad ending. So if you are into more serious dramas that are jam packed with action, betrayal and power struggles this one might not be for you.
