It pains me to learn that Jeong Nyeon's female love interest has been removed from the adaptation. However, the director's assurance that the essence of her sexuality will be incorporated into the other female characters has me cautiously optimistic

The romantic performances between the women in the context of an exclusively female theater space already carry an overtone of sapphic desire. I'll watch the remaining episodes and analyze the interactions between the female characters in depth before arriving at a final verdict

whoever rated this drama 1 star did you even watch the show like ????? youd know all their points about nepotism are wrong if you actually looked at the screen while watching the show. the director made it clear that she accepted jeongnyeon just as an understudy because if she accepted her as a normal trainee the others would think she was accepted because of her connections with moon okgyeong and not her talent (AND SHE WAS ACCEPTED AS AN UNDERSTUDY BECAUSE OF HER TALENT)
and isnt the whole point of the show thats shes poor but blessed with a voice gifted from the heavens?? so the only nepotism that she has is her voice inherited from her mother like brotha are you fr
glad you dropped the show because you dont deserve to watch it loser

anyways that just irked me a little so i had to say something.

im really glad this is a female-centered drama because you rarely see those these days and admist korea's uhhh lets just say gender problem.
i am disappointed they removed jeongnyeons gf from the drama but considering koreans censorship this is alr pretty decent ig

actors are casted well. ive always been a fan of kim taeri and she always does a great job. and jung eunchae is really fine lmao.

personally ive never been interested in traditional korean singing but this show keeps me intrigued and i do look forward to future episodes.

will probably update later but thats all i have to say for now

It's about passion to reach and follow your dreams

Really good series and hope they would continue with it as I was sitting on the edge of my seat with every episode and kept wondering what would happen on the next episode . It's about following your passion and dream and to reach it at the end but the end was sad when her mom started to sing and the episode just ended ? so from my point of view it's a really must watch series and I will definitely watch it over and over again . also first time that I heard pansori and loved it because not every singer can sing like that

JEONGYNEON: A STAR IS BORN : An original, artistic, inspirational and educative journey of dreams.

Firstly, I want to note that this is a halftime review for the first half of the show, and my thoughts may change as I update it after watching the final episodes.

"Jeongyneon: A Star is Born" is set in the 1950s and follows a Mokpo girl named Jeongyneon, who has a remarkable talent for singing. She dreams of using her gift to explore the world, achieve fame, and lift her family out of their underprivileged circumstances.

Despite her mother's opposition, she seeks help from her sister and a lady she meets, who turns out to be a renowned theater performer. This mentor recognizes Jeongyneon's talent and helps her move to Seoul, where she joins an all-women's theater group. Throughout her journey, she faces various challenges, adjusts to her new environment, and encounters different competitors and individuals who shape her path toward her dream.

This drama is inspiring and artistic, and I truly admire its originality. I want to clarify that I'm reviewing it strictly from the perspective of someone who hasn't read the webtoon, so my judgment is based solely on what I've seen in the drama. I'm aware there are differences between the webtoon and the show, but from what I'm watching, I'm genuinely impressed.

The story feels refreshing and unique, taking viewers on an inspirational and emotional journey that truly tugs at your heartstrings. The acting is nothing short of perfect, showcasing a wide range of raw emotions displayed not just by the main characters but by the entire cast.

The characters are interesting to watch right from Jeongyneon, our female lead, to the different other characters like Moon Okyeong, the famous theater performer she meets, to many more like Yeoseong, her rival as per now, and then her best friend Jooran. All of the characters have their own personalities, which contributes to the overall charm of the series. The chemistry between the characters is amazing, and their interactions and dynamics are interesting to watch.

I love how the female lead embodies this carefree, vibrant energy and at the same time has this cluelessness to her. She also possesses a strong will to achieve what she wants, and her character development is visible through the different life lessons she faces throughout her journey to make her dream a reality. The pacing and plot execution are good; nothing feels too fast or too slow, and it all comes together perfectly.

There's a way I don't realize how fast time flies while watching this series. It's engaging and entertaining but also original, refreshing, inspirational, emotional, and I could go on. So far, I recommend it if you're looking for something unique and refreshing to watch. Don't judge from the surface and give it a go. I'm sure you will love it!

Great story, Amazing cast, Impeccable acting

I can't believe this drama isn't getting as much hype as the others, but I love this story. The drama showcases all different aspects of Korean culture and that leaves the viewers mesmerised. Kim Tae Ri is a very versatile actress who embodies her characters so well, and she brought it 100% like she did in Mr. Sunshine. Shin Ye Eun, Ra Mi Ran, and Jung Eun Chae are other faces I was delighted to see. I love pansori and everything else about this movie.
Not your typical Kdrama and I love to see it!

After seeing episode 6 I had to update my start to 10, this drama is a masterpiece, it touches upon life experiences on such a deep level, the characters are so colourful and lifelike with real connections and emotions, the historical touch gives it the realistic flavour and enriched the drama just at the right level. My heart beat raises to double whenever theres a stage scene, that not only am I touched by the acting of the cast, but at how much they had to work to sing so well, and how versatile they all had to be to be able to carry those stage scenes. Playing a character, singing Pansori (rather well and skilfully I might add) and at the same time having to add that touch of exaggeration that comes with acting in stage… you truly have to have the skills or rather, have to have had trained extra hard to reach this level. I am truly at tears when I see those scenes, they beautiful. The actors worked beautifully, they true artists, especially Kim Taeri, she showed a million sides of her and it’s only been 6 episodes so far. I cannot wait, regardless how it ends I will still rate it 10 out of 10 for just all that I mentioned.

Ps: Even if it you read the webtoon previously, I still believe its worth a watch, it’s different from the source, and yes an important character was cut out, but honesty, I don’t care, it’s still wonderfully made. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a drama that touched me at such a deep level like this one.

A Drama That Captures the Heart: 'Jeongnyeon: The Star is Born'

Wow, this drama is truly a masterpiece!

With stunning visuals and a gripping storyline, each episode feels like a cinematic experience.
The cast is incredible—every character brings something unique to the table, but I especially adore Kim Tae Ri and Jung Eun Chae. Kim Tae Ri’s talent shines brightly, while Jung Eun Chae has a captivating charm that elevates every scene. I find myself fully immersed, feeling every emotion they portray.

I’m so glad I discovered this drama, but I can't believe it’s only 12 episodes! Don’t miss out on this gem—I'm already counting down the days to the next episode! ?❤️

This is that kind of thing you have to experience it once in a lifetime.

An Amazing Show! It's more than just a drama, you'll be transported to different world.

World of Pansori and Gukgeuk.
I'm so in love with the world they crafted. I don't know pansori (Korean traditional singing) and gukgeuk (Korean traditional theatre performance of only female) in real world, but in here, in this show, pansori and gukgeuk really catch my attention. It's and immersive world like we see a recorded live theatre performance. The sing, the song, the wardrobe, the stage performances are all really beautifull!

Female powers.
The casts of course delivered top notch acting especially the main star, Kim Tae-Ri. We're watching a legend in the making, her works like this show will be immortalized. Another actress like Jung Eun-Chae have little screentime, but her presence will always captivating. Young actress like Shin Ye-Eun, sure she have good track record, and in this series she show her amazing talent. Another casts also doing their very best, Woo Da-Vi as Joo-Ran, Ra Mi-Ran as Kang So-Bok, and many other i can't mention. You will feel it that they're doing their best.

Change is inevitable.
The story it self not so complicated, or nothing new. It's simple but added a world we never knew, world of pansori and gukgeuk. Overall we see a journey of a girl with amazing talent, fight her best to achieve her dream. Speak of the story, i can't put sideway the original source, the webtoon's story. Many webtoon fans outcrying their frustation because many aspects been changed. I have some experiences too with another show when a story i liked been adapted to another format or version. Change is inevitable.

If webtoon fans keep being frustrated with the changes, they will miss many amazing things in this adapted version.

Easier for us to enjoy any adapted version, as different universe, or maybe different story at all, watch it as a blank slate. I know it's hard, many other show butchered my beloved story, and it's hard not to compare. But then i realized, live action movie or series can reach wider audiences, means many more people will love a story that i also loved, eventho we each love different version.

Romance.
Once again it'll be related with original source. It'll be different, but present. Webtoon fans probably don't liked it, but for me as general audience who didn't read the original works, it's so fun and entertaining to guess what is happening along the show. I won't spill much about this, because like i mentioned before, it is fun to guessing along the show.

The Music.
Pansori really catch my attention, its a Korean traditional way of singing. The way they sing is like poetry that read outloud with melody, my apologize, it's hard to deliver this expression in another language. Original Sound Track have plenty of pansori in it list. One of the song that catch my attention is the song title bird performed by Leenalchi.
Turns out Leenalchi is a pansori pop band, so of course they have performed many pansori in modern ways, you can go to their Youtube and enjoy more of pansori.

In the end, JeongNyeon is an amazing show. It's more than just worth your time, it's a show that we have to see once in a lifetime.

Wish you all good day.

A Phenomenal Start to an Entertaining Saga

Adapted from the webtoon “Jeong Nyeon” (정년이) written by Seo Irae (서이레) and illustrated by Namon (나몬), this show is a censored adaptation of a sapphic romance!

So, does that mean we are missing out on the love story? Not necessarily, because the show still retains subtle tones of the sapphic version; obviously it is censored, so the overall storytelling is more focused on the main character’s journey to stardom. But that doesn’t diminish the authentic flavors that might exist in the original webtoon. Starring Kim Tae Ri, Shin Ye Eun, Ra Mi Ran, Jung Eun Chae, Kim Yoon Hye in lead roles, the show depicts Jeongnyeon’s rise to becoming a big star. The show has an uncanny resemblance to the Chinese classic “The Winter Begonia”. Leading this star-studded ensemble, Kim Tae Ri transforms into an ordinary Mokpo girl who has no money or education, but has a talent for singing. Her origins seem suspicious because her mother forbids her from singing despite the fact that her voice is heavenly. Despite her mother’s protests, Jeongnyeon heads to Seoul to discover a whole new world and achieve her dreams of making it big!
