Suspenseful but fails as BL
It started out great: someone not seeing themselves in the mirror but someone else struggling with a huge issue, not knowing if a character did or did not commit murder, vigilantes, etc. The series is short, only 6 episodes. You get all the answers to the above. But how do you call something a BL when one person commits suicide because the other rejects him, and the 2 main characters hug in a friendly, consoling, "I believe you; you're not alone" way? It should be marketed as a regular youth drama. The actors did a great job though. Was this review helpful to you?
i didn't expect to like it that much
it has a different story than other bl's. surprisingly attracted me. it was really short but screen time was enough to story. and i really like the poster. it gives good vibes to me.their acting is generally good but it feels a bit amateurish sometimes. some people says "it was not like a bl it was more bromance" but i think it was pretty obvious that they have feelings for each other. they don't have to kiss to show that. actors gave the emotions well.
after all, i liked it and i'm thinking of watching it again sometime.

darker slice of life short series
Overall: I would categorize this as a slice of life/coming of age series rather than a BL, it is definitely worth watching and I hope they make a second season. Aired on YouTube and Facebook.Content Warnings: please look at my comment as some are spoilers
What I Liked
- interesting premise, nice twists
- Tang had a realistic reaction with throwing a sheet over the mirror
- backstory given for why Tang acts how he does
- that it showed a darker side of an aggressive pursuit
- cute moments
Room For Improvement
- wanted more of Neo's backstory
- some timeline confusion but it makes sense by the end
- the subtitles have errors but I didn't take off for this nor the obvious product placement

More than it presents itself as
When you look at the poster for Self, what do you see? Two young boys, black and blue shorts, guitars and old camera. All set in that nostalgic Chiang Mai hue. On a first glance, it's a BL setting as any other. And that's what I expected from it. What If mixed with My Only 12%. Bad Buddy or Remember Me. Something simple, in a new coat. Something sweet.Self is not sweet. Not sweet at all. They give you hope, and take it away. They give you hurt, and make you scared. Add more hurt. But at the end... you will have to watch it by yourself to find out.

Dark and suspenseful
The description for the series states: "Tang is a young new artist who mysteriously loses his reflection. He sees a strange boy, Neo, in the mirror instead. An odd relationship starts with the conflict between suspense and trust." The picture that accompanies the description of the series shows two boys with two guitars in the background. Holding something that you really can't tell what it is., It looks like this will be a sweet romance with some suspense. So far the series has been anything but sweet and not what I expected. It really is starting out pretty dark. I wont put spoilers in here, however; I will say there are two significant disturbing scenes in it and I almost expected Neo to be a ghost from the way the first episode was headed. What happened instead was unexpected. I am staying for now because I am intrigued. However, in the trailer for episode 4 there is something bloody in the box and you can't really see what it is, if this goes further down that path I think I will drop it. This series is suppose to have 6 episodes. It will be interesting to see how it develops. I am not dropping it yet but I hope it improves. I thought this was going to be a suspense romance . The suspense part is right.
I just finished episode 4 and what a sad story so far. Only 2 episodes left. It will be interesting where it goes from here.
I finished the series and the ending was OK but definitely I won't be re-watching it. I agree with what others have said that it should have just been in the youth/ drama category not BL.

gets boring fast
At first i was very much excited about finally watching it since i had been to busy to watch it when it first came out but on the second episode i kinda started to realize that i was quickly getting bored of the show. But i decided to keep watching because of how excited i was to finally start it. When i got to ep 3 i realized how bored i was actually feeling when watching the show. Becasue of this i decided to just hold off of it for a lil bit since i still felt the need to watch the show but other then this it was okay. Was this review helpful to you?
"Inside Facts about the Series "
First, I really love the acting skills of all characters, it's very realistic though there's some moments that I don't like their acting.Second, it has a very interesting story. I love the trick they used to remove the reflection. It's so realistic.
Lastly, their lines and sound, I bearly hear them. Maybe because of the mic and the set up.
All in all, I'm keep tracking in this series. And I hope its not only two episodes. I'm looking forward for some cute and sweet scene. Remember it's boy's love series.

Was this review helpful to you?
