Detective Kosai Takeo of Wangan Police Precinct is on the verge of being demoted to the Accounts Division in a month. There is a case that he cannot forget. 15 years ago, an 8-year-old girl was kidnapped and murdered. Kosai possesses the special ability to smell the scent of blood at a crime scenes where there is murder. At that time, he had sniffed that scent in the room of university student Dojima Akira, the son of a Diet member. However, he was prevented by political power and could not arrest Dojima. Considered a nuisance for that special ability as well as his sense of justice, Kosai was isolated. He grew dejected with the police organisation. Now Dojima is in the spotlight as the hope of politics. On the other hand, a missing persons investigation is forced on Kosai. As he traces the missing person Hashizume with rookie detective Ishikawa Emi, he unexpectedly smells the scent of blood at a sophisticated garbage disposal facility. There is water there that dissolves DNA. The researcher Masaki Ryo of Japan Sustainable Environment Laboratory had been there. Kosai is convinced that Masaki “erased” Hashizume with superheated water (pressurised hot water). At that moment, a girl called Fujidera Risa who claims to know the criminal in the case 15 years ago appears before Kosai. Risa was assaulted by Dojima right before that incident. Her vitality and determination to bring a charge against Dojima despite her emotional trauma restores Kosai’s hopes and fires him up. With Risa’s help, Kosai entraps Dojima and attempts to get the truth from him. However, while Kosai is in the process of doing so, Dojima is killed by an accident caused by Risa. Wanting to protect her at all costs, Kosai resorts to a dreadful move after an inner struggle. That is to make Masaki “dispose” of Dojima’s dead body with superheated water. Masaki quickly does as requested to Kosai’s relief. But as Masaki puts out one life after another without guilt, his speech and conduct which is beyond that of an ordinary person, gives Kosai a very deep-seated fear and uneasiness which he had not sensed before... Wow, I just finished watching the incredibly Dark Movie special "Kaibutsu"(Monster) and I have to say it's been quite awhile since I've seen a movie that was so unpredictable in its subject-matter, twists and double dealings that I was on my toes (and at the edge of my seat) throughout the entire flick!

The story of Kaibutsu concerns a Police Detective named Kosai (Koichi Sato) who is determined to arrest an up-and-coming politician (Jun Kaname) suspected of a crime committed 15 years ago involving the murder of a little girl is intriguing enough, add in a surreal extra-sensory power Kosai has of being able to perceive a murder scene by scent alone, and you've got a slightly X-Files-ish tale on your hands. Going further and adding in another case he's working on concurrently with his new partner Ishikawa (Chiaki Kuriyama) involving a worker named Masaki (Osamu Mukai) working at a Sewage -Treatment Center who's suspected of liquidating bodies with the city's new high-pressure waste disposal unit, and we're reaching DAVID LYNCH creepiness!

"There are people who want to disappear, and then there are those whom people want to disappear", Masaki tells Kosai one day, and this seems inarguably true in a world where cruel criminals callously murder innocent victims and those slighted burn with taking revenge into their own hands, and as people begin disappearing left and right, the question of just who the "good" people are in this movie and who the "monsters" are begin to blur.

By the movie's conclusion, we are left with that thought to ponder, and as the movie ended and the characters departed, I for one wanted to see where the events set up in this movie would lead! In fact, the ending left me on SUCH a "What Happens Next...?" kind of feel, I even rushed to AsianMediaWiki to see if this was the pilot to a new TV series or another movie (like the two-movie chaptered Double Face, for example), but so far nothing yet....
