In the latter half of the 19th century in Russia, on a train heading to the capital, Petersburg, Prince Myshkin meets Rogozhin. Rogozhin is on his way back to his family home to claim the vast inheritance left by his deceased father, while Myshkin is returning to his homeland after a four-year stay in Switzerland where he was being treated for his epilepsy. Rogozhin, wild and rough by nature, and Myshkin, quiet and pure, form an unusual friendship despite their contrasting personalities. Upon arriving in Petersburg, they encounter a woman named Nastasya, who bears the burden of an unfortunate past.
