The 5 Most Common Comments about Non-Korean Drama

It’s no secret that when it comes to Asian dramas, Korean dramas are on top. They are typically among the highest ranked dramas, Netflix carries them, and many people started their Asian drama adventure through Korean dramas. I think the comments I read on Non-Korean dramas are a little different than the few Korean dramas I’ve watched. Because of this I made the top 5 most common comments I have read. The following is my opinion. You do not have to agree with it, but do not be an a** about your disagreement. Thank you. 

1. Japanese, Taiwanese, Thai actors are unattractive. 

I will watch a romantic Taiwanese comedy or a Japanese school drama and without fail I will see at least one comment about how the actors look. To me that is shallow. Acting is more than appearance; it is acting and getting into the role of the character. To overshadow good acting ability through how they look is ridiculous. I have even read comments stating they were unable to watch the drama because the actor was too ugly. God forbid it be a drama where there is a Korean version of it. The actors are then compared to the Korean actor counterpart in the looks department. I understand that everyone is entitled to their opinions, and I respect that. I am not saying to change your ways, but don’t get mad when a Vanness Wu or Oguri Shun fan puts you on blast for calling them ugly. I mean, c’mon. Those guys are gorgeous!

2.  Constantly bringing up the Korean Version 

When there is a Korean version of a drama, and a person then goes on to watch the other versions, without fail they will bring up the Korean version. Whether it is a compliment or complaint the Korean version is brought up. Honestly, can you enjoy the Taiwanese/Japanese/Thai version for five minutes without bringing up the Korean version?! It's like that person at the movies who read the book and is commenting on how inaccurate the movie is. It’s worse, because sometimes the Korean version is not even the original version. Some people watch strictly Korean dramas others Japanese, but regardless I am sure both fans do not want to hear the constant nitpicking of the drama they wish to watch. Just like the person who only watches the movie does not want to hear the person who reads the books constantly nitpick.

3. This is good for a Non-Korean Drama or I did not expect this from a Non-Korean Drama 

Backhand compliments don’t you love them? No you don’t. Its a nice way of being an a**. There I said it. It’s like being at a family reunion with the one relative who smiles in your face as she/he insults you. You don’t smile back because you are resisting the urge to strike back. It’s the same feeling. I have watched countless dramas where the statement of it being good despite it being a Japanese/Taiwanese/Thai drama. How about any other country having a good and a bad drama, instead of this one drama being an exception?

4. This language sounds horrible/Their language sounds horrible. 

Once again you are entitled to that opinion. I am not saying to change your ways, but I do recommend giving it a chance. I thought the Korean language was horrible when I watched my first Asian drama, but I got used to it. The storyline was good and after a while of listening their language sounded normal. I would say the same about Japanese dramas, but I started watching anime way before I watched my first Asian drama, so I am used to the language. But I have also thought Chinese (Mandarin) sounded awful when I first listened to it. It’s a matter of preference.

5. Other Non-Korean Drama fans blasting Korean Drama Fans and vice versa 

Listen, we like what we like and we have different opinions. So can’t we all agree that Asian dramas regardless of the country are awesome? Why is it a competition? Regardless of what you like respect what others like. You do not have to like it. Why do people assume in order to respect something you have to like it as well? Because you don’t.
