Films I would Recommend in a Heartbeat (Part II)
It goes without saying that one of the most popular shows in the late 90s was Sex and the City. There was no other show out there which was as bold and direct when talking about the life of women in their late thirties. I remember stumbling upon it by accident on the tv when I was younger - it was so funny. Women all around were talking about it, men as well but they weren't as eager to be vocal about it. I was a "Miranda" usually with some shapes of a "Carrie" from time to time (people who watched it know what I am talking about).
With all the sisterhood shows that are going on lately, I thought it was the perfect time to imagine my own cast for the show that is practically the stepping stone in this genre. What is more fun than following the lives of 4 single best friends in the big city?!
Casting Criteria:
- Actresses have to be in their 30's so they would fit with the characters
- I choose the ones that I would think would fit with the characters based on past dramas/movies or variety/talk shows I saw them in
Han Chae Young as Carrie Bradshaw
Carrie is the main protagonist and also the narrator of the show. She works as a column writer for a very popular New York newspaper. She can be described as a truly romantic woman who believes in soulmates and "one true love" - but despite this, she has multiple boyfriends through the series. She has an optimistic personality and is kind of the glue that keeps the group together during fights. Despite being an independent woman she often feels lonely and wishes she could have a partner to share her life with. She and Samantha are more open to new experiences with men than the other 2 women who are more on the "prudish" side. She has a hard time letting go of things/people - being an on-again, off-again smoker, and in an on-off relationship with one of her boyfriends Mr Big, who she considers her true love.
Choi Yeo Jin as Samantha Jones
I really think there is no other actress out there who could play Samantha as good as Yeo Jin could. The oldest and most sexually confident of the foursome, Samantha is an independent businesswoman with a career in public relations (PR). She is confident, strong, and extremely outspoken but doesn't believe in true love. That's why she only looks for "no strings attached" relationships. Despite that, she is very loyal to her friends, always putting them first even before herself. She is the first one that comes to the rescue when they are hurt and is always there to boost their morale up when they are feeling down. She believes that women should have the same liberty when it comes to sexuality as men do, and isn't afraid to be outspoken about it, not caring about what other people think about her. She lives her life with no regrets enjoying living in the present rather than dwelling in the past, unlike her friend Carrie does.
Hong Soo Hyun as Charlotte York
Charlotte has had a conventional, privileged upbringing coming from a rich family. She works as an art dealer in an art gallery. She is a classic over-achiever and perfectionist: a "Straight A" student, she graduated from a prestigious university where she was also 'student body president'. On the other hand, she was also a cheerleader and voted as prom queen being considered very beautiful. She is the antithesis of Samantha: optimistic, hopelessly romantic, and a believer in true love and soul mates. She places the most emphasis on emotional love as opposed to lust. From the beginning, Charlotte searches for her "knight in shining armor", and nothing shakes her belief of finding "the one", getting married, and starting a family. Usually being overly confident in her looks and brain, she has moments when she feels insecure, being afraid not to be considered boring compared to her friends. All in all, though, she loves her friends very much and always asks for their opinion when it comes to potential men she would be dating.
Lee Yoo Ri as Miranda Hobbes
The most pragmatic of the four, Miranda takes "feminism" to the extreme, considering women to be better than men. She is a career-minded lawyer with cynical views on relationships and men. She is Carrie's confidante and voice of reason always being there when any of her friends need advice or a place to crash. She worked herself up by studying really hard and relying only on herself, that's why many men are intimidated by her independent nature. Despite that, Miranda is actually afraid to let anyone in with the fear that one day they would leave or get bored of her. She deals with sexism quite often in her line of work which made her very distrustful of men in general. On the other hand, she trusts her friends completely and always listens to them when it comes to relationship advice.
Sex and the City is FUN. I think that's one way I could describe this show. First and foremost, it deals with the friendship between 4 mature women with different personalities most of the time, but who at the same time understand each other and can rely on one another. It tackles how society views single career-oriented women and how they try to mix this with love and relationships. I think it would be a really interesting drama, especially if it would focus on all 4 characters instead of on a single one. I for one would definitely watch it!
