i finished this show yesterday, and i am still thinking about that ending. i did a small rewatch and here is what i noticed so far and questions i still have.
SPOILERS FOR THE JDRAMA (episodes 1-7)!! DO NOT SPOIL THE MANGA
episode 1:
questions:
who killed gin goto?
what was the bite mark on gin goto's arm?
why was daigo moved to kuge village?
things i noticed:
- kano finds the cages where the children are kept by the goto family. he is then killed with a scythe. "that man" uses a scythe to attack daigo in later episodes. was kano killed by "that man?" the cages also look empty- could kano have been lured there?
- subu is the first villager to greet daigo and his family and is always the prominent figure in his conversations with villagers, foreshadowing his prominence in the village.
- the villagers move the agawa's into their house. could they have planted a bug as early as episode 1?
- an old women kuge villager remarks that in the old days, they used to pour the oil from cypress wood onto bodies to prevent decomposition. however, we know now that some of these "old traditions" are actually current ones.
- when keisuke reveals there has been a dead body, the camera pans to sabu and the villagers who seems surprised at this fact or nervous that a body was found.
-keisuke remarks that his grandma was getting "senile" at her old age. in later episodes, it is revealed that gin goto had the laughing sickness
- keisuke never denies anything. he insults or changes the topic, but does not lie like the rest of the goto family.
- kyosuke doesn't raise his gun against daigo like everyone else does.
- despite "distrusting outsiders" keisuke invites daigo to drink with the goto's. he teases daigo by saying "you can be friendly with the other villagers but not us?" could keisuke want daigo to be on their side?
- yuki gets mad at mashiro for doing oragami. mashiro made oragami for tsubasa (the serial killer)
- there's a nail in daigo's bicycle tire. could this be the villager's way of limiting or tracking daigo's movement?
- instead of running off when mashiro sees "that man", i think she wanted to show him kindness in the way she did to tsubasa. in episode 3, mashiro says the reason she wanted to be nice to tsubasa was that "someone has to be nice to him or he will keep getting worse and worse. i feel sorry for him."
- the goto family and the rest of the village are distinctly in different groups in the search efforts.
- when daigo and kyosuke are left alone when hunting the bear, kyosuke looks terrified, waving the gun at everything that moved. kyosuke is probably scared of "that man."
episode 2:
questions:
what is the goto family's funeral ritual?
who was kano's last phone call?
is "that man" the goto family's protection for the kuge village?
how do the goto family and villagers know what happened to daigo before he was tranferred?
things i noticed:
- again, keisuke never denies anything or lies regarding sumire's accusations. the others in the goto family do.
- before "that man" attacked sumire he moved his hands / looked at her belly. sumire is later revealed to be pregant with keisuke's child.
- after kano's last phone call, he rushed to the goto's house. could their have been a goto family traitor who told kano? why did they not help daigo when he seemed more capable of an officer?
- when daigo goes to the goto family's home, he is stopped multiple times. whereas when kano visited there was no one to defend the home.
- the little boy gives mashiro a butterfly. mashiro makes oragami butterflies, even giving one to tsubasa.
- the other mom asks yuki if their family is close to the gotos and how she heard daigo went drinking with them. she remarks that they shouldn't get too close to the gotos. is this a friendly warning or a hope that they take the villagers side?
- "you attacked members of the goto family. 'that man' will make you pay" is said by one of the goto family who attacked daigo
- he also said "there are consequences for you and your family." the rest of the goto family goes to yuki and mashiro which i assume is to protect them.
- the mayor is the one who stays behind, assumedly because he is adopted. is he bound to the same goto family rules?
- the goto family elders stay at home and do not leave the house. why? maybe they are afraid of the kuge villagers?
episode 3:
things i noticed:
- yuki tells daigo a firemen found him passed out by the river. mashiro saw "that man" by the river in episode 1. in episode 2 ends, "that man" is dragging daigo to some place.
-daigo's police escort was particularly useless during the tunnel gun shoot out. my guess is he's an undercover from kuge village.
