What originally drew me to dramas was the crazy hyper anime-like dramas, but eventually I stumbled upon some more mature/serious dramas that surprisingly blew me away, touched me, and grabbed my attention in a way that I didn't expect them to. So here's my list of serious/more mature dramas that blew me away Ninkyo Helper Nagareboshi Life Last Friends Innocent Love Orange Days Code Blue Pride Love Shuffle Long Love Letter Jin Kaseifu no Mita Forgive me if this seems more like a blog. Please feel free to talk about this topic, the dramas, or suggest more.
Last friends blew me away as well. The acting, plot, the character of each character was interesting. I've seen Orange days and Ninkyo helper as well and got me thinking too. I would recommend: - Sunao Ni Narenakute. It's a bit like Last friends, because the story revolves around a group of friends and Eita and Ueno Juri plays in it as well. I think you might like this one as well. - Zeni Geba; about greed of money and death. - Aishiteru: a ten year old boy who is convicted of murder and it shows both sides of the story. It's actually more about family and motherhood. - Zenkai Girl; a female lawyer who takes care of a child and a guy who owns a little restaurant who takes after a child. And I notice that you watch mostly Japanese dramas, so here are also some recommendations of Japanese movies; - Nobody knows; a bunch of kids are abondened by their own mother. (i cried my eyes out during this movie) - Koizora; a teenage boy with cancer. (i'm aware that there's a drama of this as well, but i've only seen the movie version)
Long Love Letter was amazing! Ninkyo Helper, Nagareboshi, & Innocent Love were all very well done serious dramas. I'll recommend the following J-dramas: - Mother - Himitsu no Hanazono - Tokyo Wankei - Last Christmas - Kiken na Ankei - Beautiful Life - Ai no Uta Nobody Knows was very powerful. Koizora (movie & drama) was excellent. Tokyo Daikushu remains one of my favorite movies.
Is this a discussion thread or are you asking for suggestions? I'm only asking to see if it should be moved to the Rec forum or just leave it here. I like the thread. :) I liked Nagareboshi, but I'm not too fond of the Koizora movie.
Hi, being a little older than the average drama viewer on here, I have watched loads of 'mature' dramas and all of them strictly Japanese. I have enjoyed many of the ones that have been mentioned too. I would say that most of the Takuya Kimura dramas can be considered mature and I recommend them all. If anyone is interested you can see my drama list for suggestions.
I second that. Kimutaku is such a wonderful actor ( I just had to say it). 3 matures dramas I recommend of him : Beautiful life, One Million Stars Falling from the Sky and Nankyoku Tairiku. I think 1liter of tears is a must see if you want a dramas to touch you because is based on a true story. Dont' ever watch Sunao Ni Narenakute when you're depressed. I did that and well... that wasn't a good idea. the Crucible is a kmovie but I don't think anyone can watch this movie. You have to be prepared to what you are going to see. I didn't know about the movie nobody know, I will have to watch.
Some that I found mature and serious were:

White Christmas
Freeze
Namtan Mai (Burnt Sugar)
Jam Loey Rak (Defendant of Love) -- Very serious, mature, and had moments that were quite harsh
Kaew Tah Pee (Apple of my Eye) --It does have funny moments, but there are very serious events going on as well.
Some serious dramas I love : (that's 4 of my top 5 lol) Soredemo, Ikite Yuku Orthros no Inu MARS Time Between Wolf and Dog
Wow, lots of recommendations. I'll definitely refer back to this when I'm looking for a serious drama next time. I've got to balance out serious and goofy. I just got done watching Last Friends (serious) and now I'm watching yuusha yoshihiko to maou no shiro (very goofy) lol.

I liked Nagareboshi, but I'm not too fond of the Koizora movie.

It seems like it's heading in a rec direction. It's fine wherever you put it.
Some of the mature stuff I´ve watched are:

Majo no Jouken- Love between a female teacher and her student! Its a very good drama.

Deep Love- This drama is very serious because its about a young prostitute and how she lives her live.

Crying out love in the center of the earth- Both drama and movie are bery nicely made and mature.

Good Life~Arigatou Papa Sayonara- I really liked it and both father and son are very good in their acting.

Fuyu no Sakura- Its a nice kind of a love story

Most of the dramas above I already watched.
wow, thanks for the thread, I was looking for something like this. I totally agree that all the serious and mature stuff is mostly japanese...Or may be I do not know much of the korean...Any more korean recommendations?Well my favourites like, Long love letter, Life, White Christmas, Love Shuffle, Soredemo ikite yuku and Last Friends have been mentioned above...I'd like to add Watashi ga renai dekinai ryuu, 14 sai no haha, IS- otoko demo onna demo nai sei...as for the movies Battle Royale, Go, Confessions and Ikigami-the ultimate limit...Not too many movie recommendations because somehow I am having hard time watching a japanese movie, you know the slow pace or lack of the music etc...
OMG thank your so much for this<33 There are so much of my favourite dramas there (Love Shuffle, Nagareboshi, Last Friends..) I'll be sure to check the other ones out! I'd also like to add another to the list, definitely Freeter Ie o Kau.
I have to add another one to the list - Shiroi Haru
Kingyo Club, MARS, LIFE & Death Girl are my favorites, they are all amazing !
