Bai Shuo, in her past life, was Yue Mi/ Xing Yue, the Deity of Stars and Moon in the Ancient Realm, and the best friend of Shanggu, the leader among the Four True Deities of the Ancient Realm. However, she was killed because of Tianqi, another of the Four True Deities, and reincarnated into the mortal realm as the second daughter of a general's household. Yue Mi had unrequited feelings for Tian Qi. 

Ao Rui Peng plays Fan Yue/ Jing Yuan. In his past life, he was the Demon Deity, one of the Four True Deities of the Ancient Realm. He was also an admirer of Shanggu. To prevent Shanggu from sacrificing herself to save the world, he went as far as to catalyze the Blood Formation and bore the sin of causing Yue Mi's death. He later reincarnates as the Demon King who no longer has any memories of his life as a deity.

• In the show, it was shown she died protecting Tian Qi, finally confessing her feelings for him as she takes her last breath. They grew together, went through thick and thin together, and were the best of friends. She harboured feelings for him while he was smitten with Shanggu.  Even years after her death, he continues to live his life carrying his memories of her with him, along with his guilt.

As the novel remains unfinished, it is still unclear if the show will end with a HE.

For anyone who needs clarification regarding the timeline or character relationships to the APL and TLI adaptations or the 3 novels.

At the start of the novel MM adapted (the unfinished one), It roughly takes place in the period shortly after the era Yuan Qi/Shang Gu's son (The Last Immortal) sacrificed himself. Tian Qi returned to the god realm briefly after searching the world for Yue Mi's shattered soul during which he realized his love for her (it was during this time period that he rescued Bai Shuo). He finally had the opportunity to resurrect Yue Mi. However during the progress, he was disrupted by a fight between the demons and immortals and he "died." Reborned as Fan Yue.

Jing Yuan = name he used during his time in the demon realm in APL.

Xing Yue = Yue Mi's god title

Due to copyright issues, Tian Qi and Yue Mi's names won't be used and their backstory will be altered.

For the sake of clarity I'm going by the plot of the novels because the drama adaptations needed to change a lot due to copyright.

1) At the end of APL, Shang Gu kneeled for a really really long time (thousands of years for Bai Jue to return): During this period Zhi Yang took over the god realm; Yuan Qi got sent to the immortal realm to be Dong Hua's desciple; and Tian Qi searched all the realms for fragments of Yue Mi's soul.

2) During the events of The Last Immortal: Tian Qi was only mentioned. During this era, he only went everywhere to search for Yue Mi's soul to bring her back. By the end of this story, Bai Jue returned to life, Yuan Qi sacrificed himself, and Xuan Yi (the fallen true god) returned to the god realm after helping Yuan Qi with a chance of resurrection. 

At this point in the timeline, Tian Qi briefly paused his journey searching for Yue Mi's soul because he heard of Yuan Qi's death. He went back to the God Realm and the 5 true gods had a brief gathering. This is where he finds out from Shang Gu that Yue Mi actually loved him. Tian Qi/Yue Mi's love story differs in APL and the novel in which APL showed Yue Mi confessing to Tian Qi before she died, but in the novel, Tian Qi only found out about Yue Mi's true feelings for him at this point in the timeline. His journey searching for her soul is done for the fact that he felt he owed his friend a life. After this, he reflected on himself and realized he actually loved her too, which leads to events in MM.

3) Tian Qi rescued Bai Shuo and her sister during his journey searching for Yue Mi's soul unknowing that it was a fragment of her soul's reincarnation. Bai Shuo initially met Tian Qi: Around chapter 10 of this book, he found a sufficient amount of her soul to be able to bring her back, but it required him to exhaust a lot of his power, and was very dangerous for the both of them. When he was performing the ritual to bring her back, it was disrupted by a fight between the immortals and demons outside of his home, thus he couldn't complete the ritual. As a result he 'died' but not really, his soul got dispersed. That's how Fan Yue came to be. Fan Yue is his new form without memories of the past.

 Haezyi:

1) At the end of APL, Shang Gu kneeled for a really really long time (thousands of years for Bai Jue to return): During this period Zhi Yang took over the god realm; Yuan Qi got sent to the immortal realm to be Dong Hua's desciple; and Tian Qi searched all the realms for fragments of Yue Mi's soul.

Actually, In the novel, Shanggu kneeled for only 10 years then she was blewn out and got injured. Bai Jue was reborn 90 years after that event.  In the drama, this was changed and Shanggu kneeled for 500 years.

In the novel when Bai Jue returned, the god Realm would close for 1000 year to nurture the new reborn true good. That's why Bai Jue came to divine realm to meet Yuanqi and told Yuanqi to return to God realm but Yuanqi declined since he was busy with saving his sect brothers and  Ah Yin.  Later, Ah Yin died and it took her 1000 yearsin reincarnation cycles to return as Feng Yin. A few months later Yuanqi died to seal the Netherland World. Xuan Yi was persuaded by Zhi Yang to step out of Netherland World and he saved Yuanqi's piece of soul which was trapped in Feng Yin's jade. But it took another 1000 years (I am not quite sure) for him to resurrect. Yuanqi's soul was always beside Feng Yin without her awareness. However Tianqi once passed-by the Phoenix Island and met Yuanqi's soul. From conversation with Yuanqi, he became very determined to resurrect Yue Mi as fast as possible, thus he decided to use very extreme and dangerous method to do so. And then the process was disrupted by the flight between demon and deity high rank individual (Zhen Yu and Jin Yao if I recall correctly)

And from what I remembered in Ancient Love Poetry, in the  end  he took over at governing all 3 realms because Shanggu didn't want to, the other True God (their older brother) didn't want to, and Bai Jue had sacrificed himself (I also thought Tianqi took up the role because he wanted to keep himself busy).

I agree with you that one of the reason that Tianqi took care of the gorverning job is to keep him busy. Another reason is Zhi Yang had been hibernating for more than 60k years. Thus he needed some time to recover and adapt to new situation in the three Realm.
