Japanese Dramas
Not always in an order because Japanese dramas can be very difficult to rank.

1. Colorful Love: Genderless Danshi ni Aisareteimasu
Japanese Drama - 2021, 10 episodes
The first episode did a great job of setting the tone of this drama. It is something new, is SO fun and heartfelt, brings up meaningful and important topics, and on top of that it is really charming and makes you excited to see what happens in the next episode.
They do a great job of not just showcasing authenticity but also starting conversations and showing both attitudes people may have.
Of course, one of the best things is just how healthy Meguru-Kun and Wako-Chan's relationship is. They are just one of the healthiest couples if not THE healthiest couple I have ever seen.
What is also incredibly refreshing is how there is no love triangle or rival competing for the ML or the FL. The sole focus is not them getting together, but rather the challenges they face united together once they are in a relationship that just have to do with every day/personal/work problems.
Each episode I kept expecting there will be some unnecessary conflict between Wako-Chan and Meguru-Kun, but it never happened. I loved that! And the conflicts and issues we did see were resolved through communication, trust, and understanding.
Kira is just Kira. He is THE Kira. He is an absolute riot and the epitome of an oddball manga or anime male protagonist come to life, or a villain. Lol. He also has a lot of heart but just can't always figure out how to express his feelings properly. I adored him being paired with Asahi. They went great together and balanced each other out. Asahi needed some more unpredictability and fun in her life. Kira needed some stability.
This drama was a spectacular ray of sunshine for my mornings, as well as evenings. I will miss having a new episode to watch. I have no doubt I will be coming back to rewatch this over and over again.
For now...
"Come on, set forth!"

2. 30-sai made Dotei Da to Mahotsukai ni Nareru rashii
Japanese Drama - 2020, 12 episodes
You want to inject yourself with lethal doses of cuteness? Watch this show! Cherry Magic is a cure for sadness, I swear.
The premise is also different. I haven't seen anything like it before.

3. Shujin-ko
Japanese Drama - 2019, 6 episodes
Life. That's what this is about. Just, life. The joy, suffering, advantages, struggles, and changes of many different people with different mindsets as they take in air another day.
This was something special. I could already tell from the description, comments, and reviews. But, now that uniqueness has been made fully clear to me.
Favorite quote that was said in response when a character came out to one of their friends (it's what I and everyone else in the LGBTQ+ community deserves to hear:
"Thanks for telling me. I think it's wonderful. You'll definitely become happy. With the person you love. Without a doubt." -
4. Kieta Hatsukoi

Such wholesome and supportive ML's! Ida and Aoki were everything good in this world.

5. Fujoshi, Ukkari Gei ni Kokuru
Japanese Drama - 2019, 8 episodes
This drama perfectly captures what it's like to not be straight and be in the closet.
You can go through life "comfortably" if you only ignore one of the biggest parts of yourself. But, you can't completely. Because, it's who you are.
I hope in the end Jun does find himself Somebody To Love. Not someone he feels like he has to love or should love.
Side note: I really like the use of Queen's music by the way. What a marvelous choice for this drama! So glad they picked them! The titles of the songs and the messages in them fit the situations and episodes perfectly. Here are my complete emotional thoughts if you wanted to hear them: https://mydramalist.com/profile/8835865/feeds/1XwGbyuk

6. Joshi-teki Seikatsu
Japanese Drama - 2018, 4 episodes
What a rare drama!
At first I thought this would be some sort of mean parody. But, it's not.
Miki is a very strong character with an interesting personality and outlook on life.Episode 3 was a particularly emotional rollercoaster. I was so impressed with the way they show her doubts, fears, and challenges in life as well as with family.
It's funny when appropriate and interesting throughout, while remaining respectful.
Definitely a solid 8/10 stars at the very least.

7. Eien no Kino
Japanese Drama - 2022, 8 episodes
Only Japan could pull something like this off. The way they went along with the premise like it was just another day was brilliantly executed.
It's sad but not in the typical way since it's really what everyone, including Koichi and Mitchan, knew was going to happen: This was inevitable. But at least we had the time we did.

8. Koisenu Futari

This was everything I wanted and more. And as someone who recently came to terms with her own Asexuality (just Ace not AroAce), I found this incredibly comforting and validating.

9. Silent
Japanese Drama - 2022, 11 episodes
Complex and mature characters who are more than stereotypes, surface-level judgments, or their past, impactful shots/cuts and acting and gut-punching dialogue, and honest, nuanced, and thoughtful perspectives. That was "Silent."
While I absolutely found this beautiful and meaningful, I will say that I can see how it could be difficult to get through for some people. It features a quiet romance, doesn't sprinkle sparkles over everything or give easy ways out of things, nor does it have flawless characters.
For "Silent," I can't promise you it won't hurt. I can only tell you that that hurt is necessary. Can be found on Rakuten Viki

10. Tsuiraku JK to Haijin Kyoshi
Japanese Drama - 2023, 9 episodes
Genius fourth wall breaks, plentiful dark humor, and self-awareness of touchy topics and taboos? What more could I ask for? I was highly entertained! Now the problem is that I can't seem to find another drama like it to watch.

11. Double
Japanese Drama - 2022, 10 episodes
Double is truly revolutionary. The characters of Takara and Yujin and their relation to each other: an all-encompassing web. It's needing, wanting, imitating, creating, lusting, hating, agonizing, obsessing, craving, dying, and reincarnation.
Made in my own image? Made in his image? A unique creation or a modified copy? Whatever the case, the image staring back appears to be my double.Link to Subbed Episodes (need to have an account): https://www.d-addicts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=166125

15. More than Words
Japanese Drama - 2022, 10 episodes
More Than Words said so much, leaving me with few words to express my feelings.
A painful yet meaningful illustration of the state of grief, regret, and apathy.
This was so beautifully melancholy. In particular, I loved how each episode started the credits while having the last scene "keep going" well into it; it made it feel so natural, almost like the viewer was an observer privy to a quiet and small secret.Link to Subs (Raws no longer available): https://furritsubs.wordpress.com/2022/09/16/more-than-words-engubs

16. Kinou Nani Tabeta? Season 2
Japanese Drama - 2023, 12 episodes
The world's fave super domestic foodie couple came back yet again to make delicious sunshine for us to eat. I couldn't have been more happy to watch this. This second season managed to add even more heart and background to our couple than the first season. Season 3, when?!

17. Kinou Nani Tabeta?
Japanese Drama - 2019, 12 episodes
It won't be everyone's cup of tea but it was certainly mine. Very slice-of-life with some more serious topics mixed in.
They did an amazing job making them feel like a couple that has been together for a long time and knows each other very well. And, they had fun banter :)
I also loved how comforting it was, and the great narrations and importance placed on cooking. It felt like eating a hot bowl of soup on a rainy day.

19. Koi Desu: Yankee-kun to Hakujou Garu
Japanese Drama - 2021, 10 episodes
The sheer joy I got from watching this goes beyond words. This wonderfully balanced couple with admirable sincerity and strength (and hilarity) shined. And the way they managed to respectfully and realistically portray the FL's disability and how it affected her life and relationships but was also not a negative to her was nothing short of wonderful. She is as normal as the ML is. She needs assistance as everyone else does, just in different ways, and that does not make her any "less."
If not for their temporary breakup near the end, I would be giving this a 10/10.
Chances are that you've already had this recommended to you. Just go watch it!Link to Drama Otaku page with subs (will need an account): https://drama-otaku.com/drama/koi-desu-yankee-kun-to-hakujou-garu/

20. Tsukuritai Onna to Tabetai Onna Season 2
Japanese Drama - 2024, 20 episodes
Our lovely ladies returned in this second season to grace our screens with the sweet development of their relationship, their own personal challenges and moments of growth, the meeting of new supportive and heart-warming friends, and even more delicious meals.
I know last season I begged for a second season but, now, I'm begging for a third. Pleeeeeeeeease!
If you're not watching this, what are you doing?! Do you not like JOY?!
. . .
Did I mention there's rare Ace rep?
Just go watch it, you fool! I will be over here, crying over my coffee, blessing Furritsubs for allowing me to watch this with subs.Consent Highlight: Permission is asked for hugging AND kissing :)
My favorite line from the two FLs' talk together: "I would be happy if I could also try things with you one by one."

22. First Love: Hatsukoi
Japanese Drama - 2022, 9 episodes
A beautiful and emotional drama that took the "right person, wrong time" experience and expanded and breathed new meaning into it.
The approach this drama takes with time takes some getting used to. But once you understand its purpose of connecting emotions rather than linearly laying things out so as to be easily understood, you come to understand how frightfully clever and perfect the cuts between the present and different points in the past truly are.
Can be found on Netflix
-
23. Utsukushii Kare
Japanese Drama - 2021, 6 episodes
What got me to start this was knowing the ML from another drama as well as the absolutely gorgeous poster. I went in with average expectations, and I was not disappointed. It was better than I imagined.
Watching Kieta Hatsukoi and this back to back was an interesting experience. This featured a fairly masochistic character, some unhealthy relationship dynamics, and ominous music/shots. It's also somewhat dark but honest about it, with characters who are at times morally grey. But, believe it or not, you can enjoy this and KH.
This was an addictive drama that made me curious enough to go back and rewatch the recently released episode about six times before the next one came out. I had to pay attention to see what I may have missed. And there are quite a few small details that can be missed.
It was also wonderfully shot, had moments that promised something dangerous, and the music in particular really lended to the uncomfortable atmosphere at times. The light masochism was also quite interesting to watch. Not to mention they did a great job at building tension between Hira and Kiyoi. You feel those stares.
The way this was shot in particular really lended itself to the idea that Hira views Kiyoi as a King/God. They did an amazing job of making us see him the way he did too. On a pedestal. Above him. Some untouchable ethereal person. He comes into the classroom and a light shines on him while petals fall gracefully around him. He turns to the camera and gives us one smile and our heart stops. Or with symbolic moments such as Hira getting down on one knee to kiss his hand and even that small touch is so precious and he feels unworthy for receiving it from his King.

24. Utsukushii Kare Season 2
Japanese Drama - 2023, 4 episodes
I don't want it to be over! *sobs*
It continued on from the first series perfectly, but at the same time there were small changes in Hira and Kiyoi's dynamic; namely Kiyoi chasing after, propping up, and expressing more of his feelings to Hira.
I only wish the finale went out with more of a bang! Maybe that's just me not-so-secretly wishing there were six more episodes though. Lol.Can be found on Rakuten Viki or GagaOOLala

25. Fuujinshi
Japanese Drama - 2022, 9 episodes
Saying I loved the ever-loving shit out of this would be an understatement! Gripping sword fights, an intriguing story, and a mysterious and talented ML? Yes, please!
My one minor gripe is that having the reporter FL felt rather unnecessary/annoying at times when I would have rather spent more time with Kakeru and the rest of the team. I understand that she served as a way for the viewers to learn what's going on, but still. Can be found on Rakuten Viki
-
26. Okitegami Kyoko no Biboroku
Japanese Drama - 2015, 10 episodes
Very quirky, unique, and fun!
Never has there been such an amazing drama with amnesia. I can't think of any that did it better than this.
Yes, her memory resets every day. "To be continued, but she won't remember." But, her heart and spirit remain the same. She could be anything else and do anything else, but every morning she chooses yet again to be Okitegami Kyoko-san, Private Detective. That's just who she is. Who she chooses to be. -
27. Zettai BL ni Naru Sekai VS Zettai BL ni Naritakunai Otoko

28. Ossan's Love Returns
Japanese Drama - 2024, 9 episodes
How this drama filled my life with joy and laughter. Each Ossan's Love production from Japan always takes me along for a uniquely fun ride. They somehow manage to take the most ridiculous lines and situations and not only make them funny but heartfelt. I think Ossan's Love Returns somehow even managed to top its predecessors in this manner.

31. Ossan's Love
Japanese Drama - 2018, 7 episodes
I stumbled across this one quite randomly and my only thought was that it looked a bit interesting and there seemed to be a large fan base for it. I'm so happy I gave it a shot!
It was so ridiculous, over-the-top, heartfelt, weird, cheesy, and funny.
I was glad at the times when Haruta finally stood up for himself. And, despite his many shortcomings and odd behavior, he was still believably charming.
This drama is just so fun to watch! I had no idea where things were going to go at times, I just knew it was going to be a wild ride.
I really enjoyed my time watching this drama. I enjoyed it so much that I moved around my time for other dramas just to get to this sooner.
Easily a 9/10 in my heart. -
32. Todome no Kiss
Japanese Drama - 2018, 10 episodes
Well, first off, he was so incredibly stylish. I loved all of his outfits! Also, the whole "time leap" made for so much fun. I really enjoyed seeing how he cleverly used the information he gained and how he got out of tough situations. He was terribly charming and clever.
All around, a highly entertaining drama with lots of fun twists.

-
34. Kamisama no Ekohiiki
Japanese Drama - 2022, 8 episodes
First off, the chihuahua was everything!
Moving on, the amount of time they devoted to the characters questioning their attraction/feelings as well as questioning the very meaning of love was wonderful to see.
Is it the personality, the appearance, or both? Is your love not "real love" if a change in the body of the object of your affections "turns you off?"
This is just a taste of how in-depth the conversations were.
Also, I loved how basically everyone was Bi/Pan. To have a main cast not be primarily attracted to just one gender and actually show it/talk about it was beyond refreshing.
Also, also, there was some gender-questioning as well that was respectfully done.
If you haven't seen it yet, do. Consider it highly recommended from yours truly.

37. Life: Senjou no Bokura
Japanese Drama - 2020, 4 episodes
So sweet and at times heartbreaking. Why do you have to hurt me in this way? It does end happily though, which fixed my sadness.
I love how they have such childish imaginations in the beginning. And the line concept was so cute. Can be found on Rakuten Viki (watch the directors cut)

38. Muchuu-sa, Kimi ni
Japanese Drama - 2021, 5 episodes
It pulls you in with its oddness right at the beginning and increases it all the more as it goes on. The time skips were a bit confusing at first so I had to stay on my toes for a little while so as to try to remember the order of events and what happened before. In the end, it all came together perfectly. I loved how it showed how connected seemingly unconnected people could be. A long linking chain that only gets added to.
I also love how it is generally charming but also has strangely at many points given me the feeling that some deep darkness is going to appear. It's as though it is bordering on the edge, about to take over.
Anyway, it was wonderfully odd, heartfelt, and unique.

39. Sixteen Shoukougun
Japanese Drama - 2020, 8 episodes
Should have a Sismance tag at the very least. Just saying!
For the smaller details that add to this drama: the unique shots, cuts, camerawork, and music really lend to this drama's dark tone or light tone always nearing or having the potential to turn dark.
Obsession and trauma are the main themes of this drama. How much to hold on and how much to let go. As well as trying to overcome your past trauma and not let it consume you.
Sometimes when we love people we ignore the many red flags. The subtle manipulation and lying can become part of normalcy and we accept it all because we love them, care about them, and want them in our lives. But, that is not healthy. Manipulating and lying to someone in order to get them to spend time with you is not healthy.
This was a really dark at and at the same time really sweet drama. I think the amount of episodes and length of them was perfect. A very solid 8.5/10 for me.Subbed Episodes on Irozuku fansubs.

40. Nibiiro no Hako no Naka de
Japanese Drama - 2020, 6 episodes
Oh what a tangled web we weave, inside this box where we continue to deceive.
Partial Review:
This is not a drama for most people. It is not something casual, generally pleasant, or easy. It is a drama that makes you feel uneasy and does not offer simple or generally expected solutions/problems or even characters you can always feel okay rooting for. Even the ending doesn't quite sit right. But, that's what I think they were going for.
If you are looking for a very interesting watch maybe give this one a go. Just, look at all the tags first for any trigger warnings that may be damaging for you.

Don't start this if you're looking for big action scenes or intense romance.

47. Watashi to Otto to Otto no Kareshi
Japanese Drama - 2023, 10 episodes
What started as almost a typical cheater-husband-discovered-and-wife-struggles-to cope-plot quickly became a heartfelt drama about not only society's judgment of the not "normal" but also one's internal judgment, the struggle to fight for one's own happiness, and the willingness to open oneself up to new possibilities, all featuring genuine people trying to do the "right" thing. And beyond just that, the scale of "like."
If you're looking for an exploration of relationships that is complicated but worth it in the end, then this is the drama for you.
I only want a monogamous relationship. I may not understand--I say "understand" because I myself have felt some annoyance hearing Straight people say they "understand" my being Bi, because, to me, you can't truly understand something unless you live it--what it's like to be polyamorous. But I can accept the reality of it because it is someone's reality, I can learn about it, and I can widen my understanding of the world past my own nose. I feel that's what this was trying to say in the end: You don't have to "get it." Just try to grow and see more than yourself. Can be found on GagaOOLala or free websites

51. 1 Litre no Namida
Japanese Drama - 2005, 11 episodes
I came in prepared. I knew. Yet, without me noticing, Aya's struggles built and built and built . . . Until I couldn't see myself, couldn't see the screen, couldn't bear to not wrap my arms around myself, tight . . . Couldn't hold the tears back anymore.
There is no magic cure to come to the rescue. Love doesn't fix everything. Family doesn't fix everything. You cannot go back, and there is only so far you can go forward. So what can you do? Nothing? No. You can find a reason. Any reason--no matter how small--to keep on living.
My advice: Watch this drama. Only, do not watch it unless/until you are in a mentally healthy place.Link to YouTube Playlist: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLxNVM2emFBx3ZYZjGh___LEDIKNhT-6y5

Japanese TV Show - 2024, 10 episodes
The short version of my thoughts on this show: The Boyfriend was an emotional journey that was not just focused on finding love but on friendship and personal growth. I felt honored and overjoyed to see each man find new courage, realization, motivation, and/or peace in their life.
This Queer reality dating show marks a monumental step forward for Japan, finally following in Korea's footsteps with their successful "His Man."All in all, I was quite delighted with The Boyfriend, regardless of production choices. I sincerely hope there is a second season.

55. Kekkon Aite wa Chusen de
Japanese Drama - 2018, 8 episodes
This was a very powerful and touching drama. I especially loved how, in this world of Japan, things appear hopeful by the end. It seems that because of this terrible law, people are now taking notice and caring more about minorities, those who are LGBT+, disabled, ill, of a different nationality, etc.
Regarding Representation: I have only praise. I would recommend it just for the rep alone and how it showcases/discusses Queer people.

56. Shounen no Abyss
Japanese Drama - 2022, 8 episodes
I'm in awe and disturbed. This is pure corruption and despair that is perhaps beautiful? Sincere yet the worst lie ever told? I'm not sure how to explain how it made me feel. All I know is I couldn't tear my eyes away from the darkness I was staring directly into; my soul may have been dragged into the Abyss by the end.

58. Takara no Vidro
Japanese Drama - 2024, 10 episodes
This was a sparking marble in the grass for me.
The first couple of episodes, while charming, had me fearing mediocrity. But over time, I grew to see a surprising level of quiet depth and maturity in the leads. These young men have been hurt and are still dealing with hurt. One is more naive and hopeful, though, while the other is disillusioned with reality and terrified.
Takara's fight to not fall into the same depths as his mother and fear of himself the moment he mirrors her behaviors, even slightly, in particular, stood out to me.
"If I want something, I must have it."
What it must be like to fear your own wants and feel the need to push your desires aside in case you just might take a treasure into your hands, keep it from the world, and unwillingly crush it.
I would like others to see what I did, but I understand if you don't. Regardless, I found this a precious watch that I almost want to keep to myself. My own "treasure."

68. 25 Ji, Akasaka de
Japanese Drama - 2024, 10 episodes
The pacing of this drama was a near-masterclass, at least to me. With an exciting lead-in, the MLs' relationship seemed to move at break-neck speed (on the surface) but was full of reflection, fear, and carefully said words. Many might disagree, but I found the flashback episodes a perfect "interruption" to dive deeper into both their current mentalities and past states, which put actions taken when they met again into a whole new light. I felt excited seeing everything laid out and awaiting their next interaction, armed with all the new information presented to me. In particular, I loved the execution of Asami's story.
Final note: I must say, the love scene? Felt like I was watching living, breathing art comprised of two people brimming over with feelings, desperately needing and reaching for each other, physically connecting, all while begging with their eyes, "Please, stay. Please, be here with me." Take notes, other dramas! Take notes!

A lighthearted yet critical take on how love and expectations are casually placed on people just going about their day or making personal decisions.

A drama full of coincidences and missed chances, and characters somehow inspired to find optimism and joy for life and their dreams. 73. Shanai Marriage Honey
Japanese Drama - 2020, 7 episodes
These two were really sweet as honey!
I liked how this made for an unconventional love story. Also, I was glad to see the ML seek enthusiastic verbal consent and, while being flirty, wasn't forceful at all. And the FL truly was cunning in a sweet and amusing way.
Overall, I see why it was so loved. Can be found on Rakuten Viki

74. Kare no Iru Seikatsu
Japanese Drama - 2024, 8 episodes
It was light and charming. And the two MLs were so thoughtful with their words and actions, always considering the other.
I found it beautiful how their feelings were so pure they cried when confessing. Even just glancing at each other, you could truly see the love overflowing from their eyes.
Also, the friends shaking hands and literally confirming they hopped aboard the "ship?" Comedy gold!
Side Note: Kazuhito really reminded me of Ida (from Kieta Hatsukoi). The care and weight he attached to his feelings were nearly on par.Link to Drama Otaku page (will need an account): https://drama-otaku.com/drama/living-with-him/

This was just so funny! Not as hilarious as Kieta Hatsukoi, of course, but it had me bursting out into hysterical laughter at least once every episode.

78. Horimiya
Japanese Drama - 2021, 7 episodes
Wonderful. I like how simple the premise is as well. Two people who only want to show a more unknown side of themselves to just each other. It makes it more special to them that they have only one person who is that close to them.
I also really like how the two of them basically formed their own little family along with Hori's brother. Miyamura almost became an adopted father of sorts. It was really sweet to see how much he genuinely cared about her little brother.
-
79. Kasa wo Motanai Aritachi wa
Japanese Drama - 2016, 4 episodes
They manage to add a lot of depth to the characters in so short an amount of time. It's really well-done. That, and it's shot and lit in a way that fits the mood of every scene. It starts comedic but then quickly goes dark. There were a few instances where I thought the writing of the dialogue could have been better, but for the most part I found it convincing and moving (probably because of the actors doing a damn good job).
Overall, I found it quite touching and I felt a bit like I was getting a peak into the intimate details of real peoples lives. In a way, I felt I didn't earn the right to know their personal stories so quickly. But, I felt honored as well.
Do not go into this with any spoilers! It is best to be surprised here. -
80. Kikazaru Koi ni wa Riyuu ga Atte

81. Chaser Game W2: Utsukushiki Tennyotachi
Japanese Drama - 2024, 8 episodes
This was a dramatic improvement compared to the first season. Fuyu reemerged more emotionally vulnerable and, though battered from intense familial pressure, managed to rise above and take a true stand for her and Itsuki's relationship.
Not only was there a more concrete storyline and satisfying ending, but they also had something to say: If we always hide, we'll never create a more accepting world where Queer people can feel safe and comfortable to come out. Let us not reinforce our culture's promotion of silence and enduring.
And Tsuki—darling Tsuki—was a national treasure, encouraging and supporting her moms just by being an innocent, confident, and kind little girl.

Japanese Drama - 2024, 8 episodes
It was an interesting watch, and I liked that they didn't have perfect protagonists. But I wished they had delved more into the characters. I cared about them, but I felt they didn't give me enough to truly get invested.
Additionally, I got incredibly frustrated by them equating love/romance with sex. Because, excuse me, Asexual people exist! Also, are you telling me it wasn't love until they had sex? That Sexual Attraction=Romantic Attraction? Because, newsflash, it doesn't!Can be found on Netflix

84. 17.3 About a Sex
Japanese Drama - 2020, 9 episodes
I have such mixed feelings about this!
#1.) On the one hand, I almost recommend everyone watch this drama just for having the extremely rare representation that is an AroAce lead and discussing Asexuality. On the other hand, I have to criticize the drama for incorrectly using the term "Asexual" for its FL when it should be AroAce.
#2.) On the one hand, the Queer characters are shown to come to their own conclusions regarding their sexuality. Example: Asahi, the Pan ML, mentions how he once thought he was Gay and even uses the label "Bisexual" for a short time before settling on calling himself Pansexual. On the other hand, there was this subtle idea that Queer people should be the ones comforting and easing the guilt of others. And by having a character come out solely for the person they love, that coming out is something to do for others rather than yourself.
#3.) On the one hand, the conversations between characters about sex education and other "taboo" topics are great! On the other hand, the group of girls often will start an episode being insanely judgemental about a topic only to completely open up and be understanding by the end. I felt whiplash from the sudden shift!
I would absolutely love to cover my eyes and give this a 9/10 or even a 10/10. But there are issues here that I just can't unsee.

It was so nice to see this actor, Akaso Eiji, in another drama. I really enjoyed his performance in Cherry Magic.
It's a cute and fluffy drama. He just asked her out immediately which had me on the edge of my seat until I saw the next episode. Also, I loved having such a nice and non-toxic ML. This drama was a great deal of fun and I really enjoyed my time watching it.

87. Kuzu no Honkai
Japanese Drama - 2017, 12 episodes
Weird, and ranging from slightly to very twisted/disturbing. Yet, also hopeful and a bit peaceful at times oddly enough.
Not as enjoyably twisted as Trapped in the box, but still a fairly interesting watch. It felt lifeless oftentimes, but in a purposeful way that you could only really appreciate.
Regarding representation, we had a Lesbian SFL. She was morally grey/dark like everyone else though. Can be found on Rakuten Viki

90. Taikan Yoho
Japanese Drama - 2023, 8 episodes
Well, this was a weird but fun watch that could only come from Japan!
I really liked how, when it came down to it, this was about two kind-of-kinky people who just hadn't had a proper conversation with each other about where they're at in their relationship, with one lead being terribly dense and unwilling/anxious to fully voice his desires and concerns and the other being forward physically all the while desperately craving simple but meaningful things from his lover: quality time together outside of sex, being relied on, being greeted at the door, and verbal expressions of affection.
All in all, I would recommend this sometimes frustrating drama. Can be found on Rakuten Viki or GagaOOLala

91. Super Rich
Japanese Drama - 2021, 11 episodes
You know, while watching this, I kept thinking it reminded me of another J-Drama I'd seen, but I couldn't remember which one it was. Then, it hit me: Le Uru Onna.
Le Uru Onna also had a strong businesswoman at the center, with side characters having their shining moments and causing her to grow along the way. Though, I think Super Rich, while admittedly less entertaining than both the first and second season of Le Uru Onna, had not only a much more complex FL but a more mature perspective on life and work that rounded out to a higher quality drama.
Regarding Representation: It's Noir approved! Can be found on Rakuten Viki
-
92. Ie Uru Onna no Gyakushu
Japanese Drama - 2019, 10 episodes
I like this second series a lot more than the first. I think that's mainly because they included more drama between Sangenya (FL) and Yashiro (FL's husband). And, there's more character development not just with the FL but with the side characters as well. For example, Adachi has his own compelling side story and is generally more present. The first series set up the possibility of him being Gay so it came naturally and easily when it was included here.
Also, there was an entire episode basically dedicated to discussing LGBT+ people and them living in a conservative Japanese society. There were some mistakes made in the explanations and outdated definitions but they did a good job for the most part of respectfully talking about and showcasing the community. I appreciated it :)

93. Juhan Shuttai!
Japanese Drama - 2016, 10 episodes
I had a fair bit of fun with this one. It's incredibly energetic and optimistic. At times, it did feel like it was trying a bit too much to always "turn things around," when realistcally, not everything ends/goes well in life. Since they were going for something ultimately hopeful, I don't feel I can rightly knock them for that, though.

94. Minami-kun no Koibito - My Little Lover
Japanese Drama - 2015, 10 episodes
This was fun. The effects weren't very good, but they had a certain charm to them.
The FL and ML were both really sweet and thoughtful. She wore down his defenses rather easily. Lol. Also, I was glad he had a legitimate reason for his past behavior that made sense in hindsight and it wasn't like he went from cold to warm out of nowhere.
I loved them as a couple :)

95. Koi wo Suru nara Nidome ga Joto
Japanese Drama - 2024, 6 episodes
This drama hit the ground running with a great opening to hook in viewers. From there, things only seemed to get better, with creative stylistic cuts and smooth comparisons between the MLs in the past and present. These two also had a great teasing push-and-pull dynamic to their relationship—they were delightfully sharp and to the point in their retorts.
However, I'm sad to say that I felt like this drama ended with a whimper in the last episode. Not necessarily like they rushed things, but that the key points along the way didn't hit right.
I'd say it's worth a watch; just don't expect a masterpiece. Can be found on GagaOOLala

99. Hidamari ga Kikoeru
Japanese Drama - 2024, 12 episodes
As someone who adored the film adaptation and has gone back to it again and again and again, this was pretty darn faithful, showing how one meaningful connection can expand someone's world and how all you really need is one person to see and understand you, just one.
I liked how this Taichi showed more of an interest in Kohei right off the bat, which led to some lovely, thoughtful moments. And Kohei was more forward with his feelings in his own way. However, over time, I did begin to feel like the drama was dragging its feet. By making Taichi more attached to Koehi but also more dense, there was this constant circling around his feelings. And while I, of course, was happy to see them explore hearing loss and the different perspectives and struggles of people who are deaf/hard of hearing, I think it took away valuable time that could have been spent with Taichi and Kohei. While they focused on Taichi's passion for making a better world/helping others, Kohei ended up taking a backseat. Some later episodes had barely any scenes of Taichi and Kohei together, let alone from Kohei's point of view.
The ending also didn't quite sit right. While it did its job and was sweet, it felt rushed and lacking.
I think this drama wanted to be bigger than it was and lost itself a bit.
I wasn't disappointed, per se; I just think they could have done more. Can be found on iQiyi or GagagOOLala

100. Kabe Sa Doujin Sakka no Neko Yashiki-kun wa Shouninyokkyuu wo Kojiraseteiru
Japanese Drama - 2022, 8 episodes
It's kooky in a good way. I agree with other MDlers in that this reminded me of A Man Who Defies the World of BL. It's got a similar style.
I had some laughs and it's fun and all . . . But the build to a romance wasn't done very well, in my opinion.
I would say you will enjoy this more if going into it you view it as a slice-of-life-ish-comedy rather than a romance.
Side Thoughts: I thought it was neat and unique of this drama to reverse the trope of BL writers being women who just have some obsession with writing about Gay guys in a stereotypical/unrealistic fashion and make it be an actual Gay man doing it.Can be found on Rakuten Viki
