Dramas where they say "gay"
alternative title: BL where they say gay rights!
Here are dramas where they say gay or at the very least acknowledge sexuality and/or the struggles LGBTQ+ folks may face
Also included are shows that deal with coming out in some form and handle it realistically and with respect.
by no means an exhaustive list since I'm only including shows I've seen and enjoyed (and remember lmao) :)
Note: This is important to me because, whilst I can enjoy shows where it's just two people who are the same sex falling in love, it's not really relatable when it's just readily accepted. There's a time and place for both of these types of stories in my opinion! Stress free gay love stories are great but I love shows that put care into LGBT rights and don't pretend it's not an issue :)
And my focus on the word gay actually being said is that so often people act like it's a bad word and dance around it!

1. The Miracle of Teddy Bear
Thai Drama - 2022, 16 episodes
This show is extremely outspoken about LGBTQ+ rights! They say the word gay more times than most other shows I've seen and they are blatant about discussing sexuality! No beating around the bush for these folks!
Marriage equality, the standards gay men are pressured to uphold just to be treated as humans even by supposed allies, the contradictions of BL dramas being exported from a country where gay marriage isn't even legal. Those are just some of the things mentioned!
This just genuinely feels like a queer series.

2. The Eclipse
Thai Drama - 2022, 12 episodes
Akk coming to terms with/allowing himself to accept his attraction to men plays a huge part in this series. Ayan has a lot of great dialogue surrounding this such as "When I first found out, it was hard too." and "This is normal. This is our nature just like anyone else." (paraphrased) they also visit a diversity cafe with lots of actual diversity!

3. Moonlight Chicken
Thai Drama - 2023, 8 episodes
Lots of talk of sexuality! My favorite line is when Wen says, when talking about gay marriage, that we might just have to wait for the conservative dinosaurs to die out. love that

4. My School President
Thai Drama - 2022, 12 episodes
Ep 12 or so has a VERY realistic depiction of homophobia and does a very good job of showing that that is unwelcome!
-
5. Wedding Plan
Thai Drama - 2023, 7 episodes
-
6. Never Let Me Go
Thai Drama - 2022, 12 episodes
Neung is gay! Which,,,, obviously; but he talks about it I'm pretty sure by directly saying he's gay. Also there's a lovely scene where he's talking about soulmates and talks about straight, wlw, and mlm in the lore :) ALSO! There's a very beautiful gay wedding
-
7. A Tale of Thousand Stars
Thai Drama - 2021, 10 episodes
Love that they say gay and it's not just a "gay-for-you" situation!! He comes to terms with his sexuality not just revolving around his relationship
-
8. Something in My Room
Thai Drama - 2022, 10 episodes
They say "Whether you're gay, bi, or pan or any other" !! One of the only instances of pansexuality being mentioned (by name) that I've seen!
-
9. Light on Me
Korean Drama - 2021, 16 episodes
Discussions and struggles with sexuality are pretty prevalent, even if not always directly stated every time.
-
10. Not Me
Thai Drama - 2021, 14 episodes
One of the few shows I've seen where they attend a Pride event!! Love to see it. Though the sexuality of the main characters isn't really personally acknowledged, it doesn't have to be in this instance.
-
11. Bad Buddy
Thai Drama - 2021, 12 episodes
ML says he's down to date any gender whilst other ML basically acknowledges he's never liked women! Also there are WLW who discuss loving women!!!
-
12. Until We Meet Again
Thai Drama - 2019, 17 episodes
I don't recall them actually using the word gay (correct me if I'm wrong!), but the main plot is literally revolving around a couple who died because of homophobia soo
edit: They do discuss bisexuality by name!!
-
13. Kieta Hatsukoi
Japanese Drama - 2021, 10 episodes
One of my favorite parts of this show involves the main characters sexuality being directly discussed.
-
14. Because of You
Taiwanese Drama - 2020, 10 episodes
One of the MCs says he's down to date men or women. There's definitely more discussion about sexuality but I won't get into specifics.
-
15. Views of Love: Grey Rainbow
Thai Drama - 2016, 4 episodes
it's been like 5 years since i watched this but I specifically remember the MC getting called "gay boy". Also believe bisexuality is discussed and it's called grey rainbow so I'm pretty sure they focus on gay rights and stuff. I forget, sorry.
He interviews LGBT people, also. And there's homophobia addressed I believe.
-
16. Dark Blue Kiss
Thai Drama - 2019, 12 episodes
There's a whole thing about coming out and being afraid of what his mother might think. I'm pretty sure there's more but I forget lol
-
17. HIStory4: Close to You
Taiwanese Drama - 2021, 20 episodes
Lots of discussions of being gay/MLM. One of the MC's flat out states that he is a gay man. There's a gay wedding also!!!
-
18. Oxygen
Thai Drama - 2020, 13 episodes
Really only one instance I can recall where Kao says "if loving you makes me gay, then I guess I am." but he shows 0 interest in women so it's not a case of the gay-for-you trope imo
-
19. HIStory3: Trapped
Taiwanese Special - 2019, 20 episodes
They briefly talk about sexuality. No one really struggles to come to terms with their sexuality unlike most others here, but it is mentioned.
-
20. 3 Will Be Free
Thai Drama - 2019, 10 episodes
My sweet boy Shin is an openly(?) gay man :)
Pretty sure Neo talks about being bi but I could just be manifesting
NOT gay, but there is a trans character and they discuss her gender affirmation surgery!
-
21. KinnPorsche
Thai Drama - 2022, 14 episodes
It's directly stated that Kinn is gay. It's also never a point of contention (probably bc everyone else is gay too)
-
22. Love Is Science?
Taiwanese Drama - 2021, 18 episodes
-
23. I Told Sunset about You
Thai Drama - 2020, 5 episodes
This is very much so a queer story. I don't know if it was created by queer people but it absolutely seems like it
-
24. I Promised You the Moon
Thai Drama - 2021, 5 episodes
-
25. Cutie Pie
Thai Drama - 2022, 12 episodes
They don't really talk about the characters sexuality too much but they have a lot of discussion about same-sex marriage at the end of the show which is awesome!!
-
26. A Boss and a Babe
Thai Drama - 2023, 12 episodes
-
27. Be My Favorite
Thai Drama - 2023, 12 episodes
