The worst part of the story is that China forced by the victors to repel its opium prohibition. By 1858, 70,000 chests were coming into China per year, bringing in some 4,500 tons of opium. That’s the same amount of opium produced in the entire world in 2016.
The Qing Dynasty fell in 1911. By that time there were 90 million opium addicts in China out of a population of 300 million. The century that followed the First Opium War is known is China as the bainian guochi (百年國恥, lit. the Century of Humiliation).
