I thought the chemistry between the two leads was very good and well directed. WC know how to use facial expressions especially his eyes to convey a lot of his emotions. Loved the costumes but not too keen about Ping Ting's. Her character wore the same type all the time and I had a hard time imaging her going through the forest as if she a bride on her way to a western wedding. Angelbaby got better as the series progressed. I do feel though that like the book, Chu bei ji should have been the one to seriously wound his adversary after all, he was known as the God of War. The ending could have been developed more with more of the characters present after all the drama that took place. Some of the flashback could have been shortened.
Overall, I can look at this series again and I have. But, if you think it will be like the novel then do not disappoint yourself. It has taken different elements from the novel and made a series that stands alone on its own. Looking forward to seeing the leads together in other works.

A surprising enjoyable drama
This Chinese drama was not the best I have seen. But it drew me in to at least watch it to the last episode. The male lead’s acting was compelling. I did not appreciate the female lead’s character in beginning but more toward the ends ; I had more respect for her. The villain did his job sometimes frustratingly. The ending is rather confusing and open ended because thinking about the intrigues throughout the series, it made me question what I saw at the end. Especially since the emperor hinted what were his plans for their future, then her surprised look at the end after someone requested her favorite noodles, and finally, the way the emperor trust guard looked at Yu’er with a “I know something you don’t.” Hmm I wondered was that my wishful thinking or was the director trying to play with the audience ? I hope someone can explain it one day.Was this review helpful to you?
